Dear Dr. Allen;-

Received inatined letter from Bob. Thot you would
like to read it. Not necessary for you to return same.

Thank you very much for promising to keep your eyes
open for Ed. You do not know what a fine boy he is and how much
help he has been to Al. when he was in the University and Mre We
end myself when we needed it most. Now it is our turn to see that
he gets to finish his education. He already has had two years of
the University of Illinois, when he stépped to help Al through
up here.

Dre Allen, I would like to explain our financtal condition
to you, so you will know just why we cannot, at present, do any
thing to wards Al's debt. Mr. W. gets $73.00 per month. Since school
is out this is all we have had to live on, Ed not getting any work this

and we having no roomers all summer :
summer. It is not enough, and I have to borrow a little each mpnth
to wat along on. During the winter , I have $42.00 from the three
rooms reserved for the boys to rent. Sometimes it takes all of that
to pay the utilities. Furnace, gas $25.00 to $80.00 We keep the
heat on until 11 and 11.30 so the student will have no excuse for
not studying. Electric light, water and the two newspapers if they
wish to read them. We have Ed's tuition, books, clothes, etc. Have
to borrow some for that, but it is all paid backnow, but a note for
$100.00 Dad was here for one year before he got any work When it
came time for Edward to enter K U we borrowed on his insurance

policy $50.00 and $50.00 to pay our bills. This last school year we

paid $1.00 on this debt, but the interest is all paid up. In addition

I keep up insurance for us and also accident insurance. Have had
at least, 50 calls for nursing since I took possession here 34
years ago. <three just recently, Gorrill, the lawyer, Lupton‘s
and another. I cennot accept any of these for I cannot leave the
80 year old Uncle of Prof Basye's. Dad is a jewel, doing so fine,
his check is cashed by me and I handle all of the money. They
seem to like him so very much at the Library, and guess what?
He gets three weeks vacation this year, with pay. Isn's that
grand? We are so grateful. He got we year but spent every
day of it painting and fixing up the house. This year, I had to
see that he got away, at least , part of these three weeks. You
know that is what happened in St. Lovis. Working too hard and not
enough recreation. A neighor was going to Oklahoma City, so I had
him take Dad, paying our share of the expenses, so he can get to
see Al. and find out just what is the trouble down there, why
they can't even pay the interest, and why, he cannot even write
to you. Hewon '+ write to us. So, now we will see, just what the,
matter may bee We have such nice times with the fecal dinners,
farewell parties,& and I have the different young ladies here to
dinner on Sunday and Mr W and I take them to Church and Ed takes them
to the show and back for Sunday Tea, so I know they have had a
pleasant and inexpensive day, and I cannot tell you how grateful we
all of us are for everybody to have been so kind and given us this
opportunity, and we all just dearly love Lawrence. Fo me, it has been
"A Havens of Rest." So different from the large busy City.‘ I‘tkink
this explanation only fair to you, Dr Allen.

This is Monday evening and I wanted to get a letter on the mail “
to tell you a little as regards Tucker. I came home yesterday, Sunday,
and stopped in Manhattan as Gardner had asked me a number of times to
stop and see him but he was always awaye

This time he was gone too, but I made some inquiry and finally asked
some of the folks about the house if he had not gone to Winfield and they
said he had and I asked if he went to see Tucker and they said 'yes' and
that he (Gardner) had just phoned before I stopped that Tucker was un-
decided and would know Monday (today) what he would do, that is where he
would go. In the course of the talk someone remarked that likely Tucker
would eventually go to KU since the Aggie reputation was not very out- |
standing just now, ; .

I do not know that the above is of interest to you but thot it {
might be and if so, you are welcome. I am not writing because I am
much interested in Tucker nor where he goes, As a matter of fact I have
becore a bit sour on his mind changing but yet I feel he would be a fine
man for your future teams and after all an older person must ‘overlook!
the wavering of youngsters in the years they are easily influenced.

I want to ask you this as regards Max, I think you mentioned work
for him, a couple of hours a day. Would that start at once, that is as
goon as he enrolls or school opens? I want him to be clear on his oOb=
ligationse The fact is Allen; that pressure is being brot on him to 2
go out for football and he may, or I believe will if he has the time, Not ~
that he intends to play always, unless he should be adept at it, but to
familiarize himself with the sport so that if he coached later he would
know more about fundamentals. And a former Supt. of his suggested maybe
he ought to go out and get some touch with football since he might take
up sports writing. In case he does that will it make any difference or
will he get an assignment from the football dept. or still from the bas-=
ketball? However, if he tells a coach that the coach will likely’ say ae
he is going out for a short time and will not play in future years, that
the coach does not care to bother with him. So it would put Max on the
spot and I judge that Max is determined enough that if he can do any= ~—
thing worth while at football that he will get into it and go as hard as
he Cane We talked over various angles with Dean Stockton the other daye
If you have any further suggéstion I will be glad to hear and I think Max
Will be here about Sept. Ist.

I was glad to see you the other night. I did not like Crisdes:
so well and his stories and doubted a little that story about th
luck boy; but it sounded pretty good anyway.

Kansas State at Emporia. I talked to the boy Saturday and
he still like K.U. but did not make the dollars this summer
that he feels necessary to take him to K.U. I told Lawrence
that I would write you that you might know of some student loan
in which the boy might get a loan. (I believe that around $100

dollars is what the boy would need) |
Mrs. Johnson told me that if they could borrow

the money that they would have Lawrence take out an Insurance

policy.

Dear Mr. Allen:

I am very heppy to learn that Mr. Glenn St. Aubyn, my outstanding
basketball player at Russell the past season, is planning to enroll
at Kansas University this coming fall. Without his asking me to do
so, I am taking this opportunity to write to you concerning him.

Glenn stands 6' 3" in his stocking feet, weighs 170 pounds and is
built on the rangy type. He ranted scholastically in the upper ten
percent of his class, was selected as one of the two most outstanding
boys in the senior class by the Kiwanis Club of Russell and was con-
sidered one of the most popular boys in the high school by the student
body and faculty.

Glenn was unanimously elected captain of the 1940 team by the squad,
was the lesding scorer and leading defensive player as ‘goalie’. In

‘the Union Pacific League from which came Wilmer Sheffer of Russell

in the early 30's, he was the leading scorer for two years averaging
14 points per game. He was selected by the coaches on the 1940 all
league team. His team tied for second place in the league in 1939
with eight wins and four losses, and tied for first place in 1940 with
eleven wins and one loss. In the 1940 Regional Tournament at Hays,
his team won the runner-up position.

Glenn is one of the finest boys to coach I have ever had in my eight
yeats of coaching. He is an unusually herd worker on the practice

floor following everysuggestion with the utmost care. He is an ex-

cellant trainer with 9 fine mentel attitude, does not use tobacco or

drink and is a fine influence to the rest of the squad.

Glenn has made more development as a basketball player in his high
school career than any other member of the squad. His height left
him a little awkward during his freshman and sophomore years, but he
overcame that to be outstanding as a junior and a senior. I feel that
Glenn will continue to improve more than most high school graduates

if he has an opportunity to play University Basketball.

I would like to teke this opportunity to express my appreciation to you
for coming to our Spring Athletic Banquet and giving us your splendid
address.

Trusting you will be able to use Glenn on your freshmen squad this

coming season, I am,

work that would enable him to make his board and rooms that is, if
he is the type of fellow who will work and not depend upon his

Dear Dr. Allen:

I have wanted to send you a basketball player
for some time.

Armand Dixon, who graduates from our school in
the spring, has expressed a willingness to enroll
in Kansas University. As to his qualifications and
merits, he will be eighteen the 24th of February,
is six foot one inch and now weighs 165. Asa
student he is not brilliant but is above average.
He has B and C grades with improvement noted in his
Junior and Senior years.

As to his basketball ability, rival coaches
consider him our best boy and a definite University
prospect. He has good speed, more than enough courage
and possesses more basketball sense by far than his
team mates. He also can think very fast while in
action. He is not the high scoring type but more
of a feeder and ball rustler. However, in the 15
games played this year, he has an 8 point average.

Our competition is the equal of the Los Angeles
schools.

In Dixon's high school career he has been on
three league championship teams. Our league consists
of Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Inglewood, Compton —
and Leuzinger (an Inglewood school). He has never
been on a team below 2nd place. He has been named
all league and all tournament at the Southern Counties
tournament.

boys, but I am enclosing our schedule and perhaps you
have an ex-player living in Los Angeles or vicinity
who might look him over. This should be a better way.

couple of pamphlets on our physical education set-up so the boys
can see about what they would take should they desire to enter the
