I felt at thet time thet this boy wo make almost anyccdliege’ teamiin football and basketball. He had intended of course on comine to Lawrence until he received a letter from Ralph Conger, stating that there were no jobs available this veer. As a result Reed attende Washburn,’ by the aid of a politktal job in the state house which will not help him next year. Since he has made strai a's in mathematics, it is his desire to transfer to the University, if at all possible and major in engineering. : Reed was on the freshman football team until his Frenc worried him so that he quit football in the mid@le of the season. He did not.go out for basketball, but the coach of spring basketball ask him to go out. Reed is now working out, whieh Of courge will not hurt hie eligibility in any way should he transfer. This boy is 6'35" tall and weighs 180 pounds. He was considered the outstanding basketball player of this section of the state last year. He, himself thinks he is a little light for football, unless he should take on considerable weight. Reed has never smoked or drank in his life and is a perfect trainer, «1 am very sorry, Dr« Alien, that the several bovs E have recommended to K. Dear Dr. Allen:- I am enclosing a clipping concerning the boy whom I telked to you about the evening of the Washburn-KU basketball game. Heslet is a large well built boy and weighed last summer 190 pounds. He played tackle and did the punting for Seaman last fall. He also plays baseball, being a catcher in this sport. His people are poor and it will be necessary for him to make his way thru college by his own efforts. I believe that you would find him a worth while boy to help and appreciative of any favors shown him. Inthis list, a1] of the boys, who played in the Jayhawk league are given, which would allow you to also contact other boys. The Triump Jad at Alms is a very good boy and he also graduates the coming May. Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Coach Allen, Realizing that at this time you are very busy, I am sorry to bother you, but in regard to Andrew Goedert of whom I men- tioned to you in two previous letters, I would appreciate an answer as soon as possible regarding your plans, if any, con- cerning him. I am aware of the fact that you receive many letters from coaches concerning their "All American“ players, and it would be unwise and foolish to attempt to enroll all of these boys at your school; however, I am of the opinion that Goedert would be a valuable asset. In my first letter to you I mentioned the fact that he had, practically singlehanded, taken our team to the state tournament during his freshman and junior year. Last year we were beaten in the quarterfinals by Houston who went on to win the State championship. This year we again represented Southeast Missouri by virtue of our winning the Regional tournament, and in the State tournament held at Springfield our team finished in second place. Going this far and piling up a winning streak of twenty- four consecutive games couldn't be due to the work of any one man, but to a well balanced team. However, Goedert is the man on whom we depended, not only for our points but also for making the passes that count and riding the fastest offensive player of the opponents whether he be a forward, guard, or center. In the seven games in which our teams have participated in State Tourna- ments, Goedert has been our best scorer in six, and at Spring- field he shut out one All-State guard and held another All-State forward to one field goal. During the past year he fouled out on two occasions. If you desire any additional information, I will be glad to furnish it, and if you would like to see the boy I will bring, or send, him to Lawrence. Very sincerely 7 Tipe Karp Cex ; Basketball Coach. SEWELL, SUPERINTENDENT : ° a Public Schools ESSEX CONSOLIDATED DISTRICT ESSEX, MISSOURI January 31, 1939 Dear Coach Allen, I have on my basketball team, a senior, Andrew Goedert, who in the estimation of the followers of basketball in Southeast Missouri, is one of the best ever developed in this section. I ean assure you that Goedert is a fine student and will have no scholastic difficulties in college. He is 19 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs around 155 pounds, which is small for most teams, however, his shooting ability from any angle is hard to match. His "fight", mixed with good jumping legs, account for many points batted in on men several inches taller than he. He is an excellent defensive player and can step 100 yards in close to 10 seconds. If you are interested in this boy I would appreciate a reply and, if you wish to check on his ability, I recommend you to any coach or referee in this section. This is his fourth year as a regular on the Essex Hi team. Two of these years, his first and third, he, almost singlehanded, took our team to the State Tourney, and is at present enjoying his best season. Yours truly, Wilson Langley, Coach Me Wilson Langley, Essex, lissourie Ugar Mire Langley: Dee Allen has received your letter of February 20th in regard to the scholastic reting of Andrew Goedert, but due to the rush of adninistrative details he has been deleyed in writing yous He is interested in whet you have to say about the boy, and I am sure he will write you within « short times At present Dre Allen is in Okleham City attending the tuo dey play-off of the Fitth District representatives an Cae Nee basketball tournaments JAMES ROSS, PRES. SEWELL, SUPERINTENDENT = e Public Schools ESSEX CONSOLIDATED DISTRICT ESSEX, MISSOURI February 20, 1939 Coach Forrest Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Coach Allens: I was very much pleased to receive your answer concerning ~——-Andreu_Goedert oe this school, and am glad to be able to fur- nish you w he information you desire. Andrew's father is a barber in this town and has a family of ten children. However, being a good business man he has managed to keep these children in school every day. Andrew has an Ne. Y. A- job on which he has worked for the past two school years. From this you can see that the boy will need some kind of employment in order to get through college. I assure you that he is a hard worker and will be easy to satisfy since he is very anxious to graduate from college. Concerning his academic excellence, his semester grades for the first seven semesters in high school are 10 C's and 18 B's. Two of his classes have been under me, and I am certain that he is industrious and intelligent enough to have no scholastic difficulties. Another point I would like to stress is that he is a dandy baseball player, infield or outfield, and any information you would like concerning his baseball playing could be secured from the Himmelberger-Harrison Lumber Company of Morehouse, Missouri, with whose team he played last summer. I would appreciate any reply you might make, and you can be assured of my full cooperation in any attempt to enroll this boy at your school. I firmly believe that he would make a good student and be an asset to your ball team. Very sincerely yours, Wilson «she Basketball Coach.
