Kansas University Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: I am writing this letter in the interests of a young man by the name of Carl Herring, who has been employed here by our company in order to enable him to complete his work at the Coffeyville Junior pers eee- He is a young man of fine character, energetic and ambitious, and desires now to try to locate himself in some kind of work at Lawrence in or- cer to finish up for his degree at Kansas Univer- sity. He is well above average as a tennis player and played on the junior college team here up until this year. He was unable to play on account of his work. | I realize that you have many calls from over the state in order to help worthy young people, and I hesitate to write you, but my feeling is that this is an exceptionally worthy case, and I am going to impose on your friendship to that extent. I know that if you can do anything that you will. He is a friend of a man by the name of R. W. Myers, who is part-time instructor at Kansas University, and is continuing his work in the K. U. Medical School for his M.D. He will probably go to Lawrence some time this spring to see Mr. Myers, and if it is agreeable with you, he will ante on you at that time. Pea THE O. C. S. MBG. Co. S., called me this morning to tell me that he had received a letter from you about my possibilities at Kansas University next year. I wish to thank you for the interest which you have shown in regard to me and I will eppreciate any help or advice thet you might offer. My athletics in Coffeyville Junior College have been somewhat limited duc to the fact that I have been working a great deal and have had little time. I have played both foot-ball and basket-ball, but my interest centers around tennis. It might interest you to know that Clifford Jamés Campbell, who I believe played basket-ball and tennis under your direction about twelve years ago, taught me to play tennis. Mr. Campbell is a very good friend of my family. He lived with us for three years in Okmulgee, OCkla., after he grad- uated from Kansas University. I will appreciate any suggestions you have or if you would like to see me personally I ean arrange to go to Lawrence at your convenience. The boy at the extreme right is about six feet three inches tall and is a fine physical speciman. In my opinion he is going to make some college an excellent basket ball player and may develop into an all around athlete. I am also enclosing the score in a game in which this team played and this man War- ren Settles, made about his average number of points in this game. Warren will be ready for college in the fall and if he could be under your training for a while I am sure he would give a good ac- count of himself. I was at K. U. four years in the '90 ties and I have seen many of your teams play. Very truly yours, CaN Beavers Defeat Oakley The Beavers defeated the Oak- ley five Tuesday night on the lo- eal court 45 to 29. As you probably know, hea: is only a junior in high school this for I am certain that you are familier with his athletie record. [ He seems to be rather intrested in coming to Kansas, but there is no need to go into that now. However, your friend, Grady Skillern, has another boy, Peawl wooed: who is playing his third and final year. If you are fam with the Skillern coached teams, you are aware of the fact that he turns out very few three-year men. Paul was an All-State player last year, and he shows promise of repeating this year. As the enclosed clipping will indicate, Paul is a slow starter; but, he gathers speed as the season rolls along. He has the sincerity and the competitive spirit. which reminds me to a great extent of Ernie Vanek. Both boys and e#s specially Red are better than the average base ball players. Red is an out fielder while Paul playes first base. Paul has been approached by Henry Iba of Oklahoma State but he is not. very anxious to attend that school. I learned from Red that Paul in- tends to write to you at the close of the cer season. Thus, Doc, to a certain extent, you have the fact about tHe two boys. Allen, Director of Athletics University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Coach, How is everything with you and the family? I saw Milton when he was here in Tulsa and had a nice visit with him. I have been intending to write you for some time, but you know how those things go. I have been here with Morgan since '34 and if you ever need any first class engravings, just send me the photographs and we will do you a real job. We also have a complete mat department. The thought comes to me that you do have cuts made of the football and basketball players and use a good sized quantity of mats. I would be glad to quote you some prices on making halftone plates on brass instead of zinc, which will stand more than five times the number of mats than zine will stand. Please write me r@garding my ehances of getting this work. We make all the plates for the Oil & Gas Journal, the largest Oil Publication in the world, and also get business from all parts of the middle and southwest. One of my purposes in writing you is to find out if you need a good basketball player. Ihave in mind a fellow here who graduated from Central high School last year and wants to go to school. He a ton, six foot five inches tall and a good ball player. play ed center on Grady Skillern’s state championship ball club a year. j i He is working at the present time and would have to have some means of making his expenses through school. I give you my word Doe, that this boy can easily be developed into a high scoring brilliant ball player. | Last year I played with, in fact helped organize, the Frue- hauf Trailers and we had a very suecessful season, going as far as the Safeway team in the National Tournament in Denver. I am not playing this year as they are making too mapy trips in this Missouri Valley League and are not having much success.
