Alien Director of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Sir: I have been checking into the paessibilities df takin over Hapold Long's jov next year and I find that I can only make up to $15 per month. It looks as if I will be able to have help from home to about that same amount. As you may see, this wili prove an insufficiant amount. I am sincerely desirous of attending the University of Kansas to get my degree and to part- icipate in basketball for the University if my abe ility warrants it. Harold told me that there ws a possibility that you would be able to line up some sort of job for he that would allow me to até tend the University. I shall be very happy to hear from you as soon a is convenient so that I may complete my plans fo the coming year. Very sine E. MeSpadden a we | Ceanu d 934 4 Quan di, aeeeee S aww Lana 3 urd \si! Allen Varsity Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lawerence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen, Yesterday afternoon I discussed the financial situation with Mrs. Buescher in regard to her son John's entering the University of Kansas next fall. The Buescher family is an unusual family in many res- pects. Mr. Buescher, a farmer and owner of a shoe re- pair shop, is not a believer, at the present time, in higher education for his son John. On the other hand, John's mother, Mrs. Buescher also an extensive land owner, believes in giving her son an opportunity for higher learning. It is my personal opinion that after their son hes been in school a period of time, Mr. Buescher will change his attitude and, consequently, will contrib- ute toward his boy's ecucation. When John left Beardstown to practice with your squad a few weeks ago, he was unaware of the college "pay- off" system and scholarship: offers for athletes, but after staying at the S. A. E. House he seemed to get the spirit of a "tramp" athlete much to my regret. The outcome of my discussion yesterday seems to be that Mrs. Buescher will make monthly contributions to John's education, but he desires some sort of work and also a boerd job. Before John's trip to Lawyrence he had never been away from Beardstown over a distance of thirty miles, nat- urally, his trip and association with you was one of the high-lights of his life to date. It 4s with this game enthusiasm that I think will cerry him through college. Your inquiry concerning the outcome of the first yeer's progress of our local star, John Musgrove, who attended the University of Colorado this last year MANUFACTURED ICE FRANKLIN COUNTY AND SPRINGFIELD COAL GASOLINE FUEL OIL DISTILLATE BULK STATION AIR CONDITIONED ICE REFRIGERATORS COAL STOKERS OIL BURNERS TELEPHONE $1 GLENN ICE AND FUEL COMPANY BEARDSTOWN. ILLINOIS appears to be timely. From all reports from good sources at Boulder, it is learned that John made a great hit on the basketball court only to fall down in his studies. With a boy of 17 entering college, spending from 3 to 4 hours a day on basketball, social activities, and miscell- aneous affairs, you can see what our local product was up against. I am already looking forward to next March when Kansas City will be the basketball capital of the United States. Perhaps I can arrange to spend a few days at the tourna- ment and renew my friendship with some of the coaches. If you can arrange to have me aid you in any official way in putting over the tournament, please feel free to con- tect me as it would be a treat to work with you in any way that you might think I could be of assistance to you. We were all glad to learn that Jane had secured a position in Kansas City with an outstanding firm in the design field. I am sure thet she will enjoy her work and bring renown to the Allen family. Mother and I are looking forward to your stopring in at Beardstown the first opportunity you have in passing through this territory. Sancey¢gly yours if JHGsSCK N H.
