Allen Varsity Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lawerence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen, Yesterday afternoon I discussed the financial situation with Mrs. Buescher in regard to her son John's entering the University of Kansas next fall. The Buescher family is an unusual family in many res- pects. Mr. Buescher, a farmer and owner of a shoe re- pair shop, is not a believer, at the present time, in higher education for his son John. On the other hand, John's mother, Mrs. Buescher also an extensive land owner, believes in giving her son an opportunity for higher learning. It is my personal opinion that after their son hes been in school a period of time, Mr. Buescher will change his attitude and, consequently, will contrib- ute toward his boy's ecucation. When John left Beardstown to practice with your squad a few weeks ago, he was unaware of the college "pay- off" system and scholarship: offers for athletes, but after staying at the S. A. E. House he seemed to get the spirit of a "tramp" athlete much to my regret. The outcome of my discussion yesterday seems to be that Mrs. Buescher will make monthly contributions to John's education, but he desires some sort of work and also a boerd job. Before John's trip to Lawyrence he had never been away from Beardstown over a distance of thirty miles, nat- urally, his trip and association with you was one of the high-lights of his life to date. It 4s with this game enthusiasm that I think will cerry him through college.
