You will recall when I was in Lawrence about a month ago, I talked to you about these two boys, at which time you said you would see to it that they obtained jobs if they entered the University this fall, For your information will say both boys are employed by companies , With which I am connected and both will have some money when they hit Lawrence. The parents of both boys will help them to some extent. However, as soon as I returned from Lawrence, I told both Hyle and Johnny of my conversation with you, and, of course, they are counting on the jobs. f there is any further information I can give you regarding these two splendid young men, do not hesitate to ask me and I will be very happy to furnish same. He was president of the senior class and several honor societies. He played forward on my basketball teams for the past two years and was in a large way responsible for the record that we have made. He is still growing and is close to six feet tall. We used both the slow break and the fast break type of offense and he led my scorers in both types of game. I bel&éve that he is one of the best defensive players that we had on the team this year. He is the aggressive type and wilt never give up. In one of our games this year with the score 20 to 15 against us with 35 minutes to play he scored two baskets to tie the game and scored the basket in the sudden death overtime to win 23 to el. I believe the Johnny will be a good college basketball player and a good student. He is interested in Kansas University. I feel free in giving this boy one of the best reccomendations that I have ever given an athlete in the thirteen years tha I have been coaching. He is an aggressive, clean living type of boy who has the desire to win. I believe that he would make any football team in the country. My reason for this hie is because he cmdo the things that it takes to be a great player. He is a good blocker, sure tackler, passer, punter and 2 fine ball carrier. He played fullback for me the past two years. He weighs around 170 and will weigh more as he natures a little more. He is also a basketball, baseball md track man. He is at present playing on the town team in base¥all amd is hitting L354. This past spring he hit 452% on the high school ‘team. From a scholastic. standpoint he will never be ineligible for he is a _ good sedenk, The school that gets this boy will probably get his younger brother who is a straight A student and en excellent football player as well. If you have any questions regarding this boy I would be glad to answer them for you at .ny time. First I talked to Don Hancock about coming to K.U. and he informed me that he did not think he could afford it. I told him to write you a letter, and I thought that you would do everything possible to help him. I think that Don will find it necessary to be wholly self-supporting while at the University. I know that he is working this summer as a life guard at one of the swimming pools at Joplin and may be able to save a little money from his work there. I1 bélieve that his father is a laboring man, and is not financially able to support him while in school. It was through Dén that Charles Green became interested in attending the University. I have had very little contact with this boy during the past year in high school. I do know, however, that he is an excellent basket— ball player and was selected as an All State forward. I believe that he is also @ dash man. Both of these boys seem to have very fine characters, and I believe both of them would be willing to do any type of work which they might have the opportunity to get. | Let me thank you at this time for the interest which you have taken in these boys. I feel sure that they will prove worthy of your confidence. If there is any other information I can give you, please let me know, Sincerely yours, obert L. I myself was a student of the University of Kansas and graduated from there in 1936. The main reason that I have encouraged this young man to go to K.U. and his main reason for wanting to go to K.U. is because of his interest in athletics, eee ketball. For your information I am graduating from the Joplin Senior High School this week. My main purpose in addressing this letter to you is because of my interest in athletics. During my three years in high school I have been a member of the basketball squad and track squad. I was a member of the team this year which won the state championship. We also won several other major basket- ball tournaments this winter. I am most anxious to continue my basketball career and because of the fine reputation of the University of Kansas basketball teams, and because of your excel- lent reputation as a basketball coach, I would welcome any oppor- tunity which I might have to attend school at the University of Kansas. I was captain of the track team this year, my events being in the dashes. Scholastically I have ranked very well here in the high school and participated in various extra-curricular activities in our school. May I say at this time, Dr. Allen, that I sincerely would appreciate anything you coulda do in helping me to get a college education and to be able to come to the University of Kansas and play basketball under your guidance. Dear Mr, Allen, The purpose of this letter is to introduce myself, and to make known my interest in attending your school. I am Chatles Green, a graduate of Joplin High School this past month, and have tried to be as active as possible as far as athleties go in the schools program, I am planning to enter some school this next year, and I have not as yet decided where it will be, and I am deeply interested in your school for it is rated verf highly. 1 have lettered for four years in high school basket-ball and two years in track and one in football. I Was fortunate enough to play as a regular on the Joplin High state champions basketball tham this year, and was lucky enough to land a berth on the all-state team at a guari. ly father is a Methodist minister, and he at present lives in Niangua, Missouri, and as you know a minister does not have the best of financial support, and 1 am wondering if I attended your school that I could find some sort of work or financial aid, I am sure that my parents can not see my way clear to bear my expenses in a University. The past year and at the present, I have been employed at the Y. M. C. A. here in Joplin to earn my room, and have tried to work elsewhere to bear my expenses. At present I am hunting employment for the summer vacation. I feel sure that I can attend the Junior College here in Joplin, or some of the Colleges here in the state, or even the University of Missouri, but I feel that if I advance to the degree of efficiency that I wish to attain in Basket-ball, that I could find it in your school.
