HARRISON BROTHERS, AGENTS DOWNS, KANSAS May 6, 1939. Dr. Forrest C. Alien, Director Department of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear “"Phog" :- I have been intending this letter for some time but let it slip my mind. Vance Hall asked me some time ago to write you and see what you could do for him in the way of part-time employment next School term. I haven't any idea other than to leave it up to you as I am sure the boy will make good in any work he is assigned to do. He is thoroughly sold on K U and I believe he has ail the qualifications necessary to be a success while there. He has worked Summers for the past few years and isn't afraid of work. He has had experience the past two vacations in Drug Store work and also did some tractor farming for an uncle in Texas last year. I don't suppose you have many tractors in Lawrence however. Anything you can do to help him will be appreciated as he seems to think that whatever you say will be all right with him. He certainly appreciated the talk you gave him and it was so different from the talks other Coaches and School men have given him that he felt you were about the only one who told him the truth. The others seem to think he believes that they will put him on a pedestal and bring things to him, and none of those who talked along those lines made mich of a hit with him. Adrian sindsey was out home for luncheon a few days ago and I asked Vance to come over and meet him. Ad talked so nice about K U to Vance, about Mandevilie, Red Hart, himseif, and others from small Towns without any money and how well they got along, etc. Vance had said that it probably took a lot of money to get through K U and old Ad certainly rose to the defense in great shape. He said that the other Schools could not find anything to taik against K U as a School so reverted to the rich School and Society School angle. He made me p-eased that 1 had asked him to talk with Vance and certainly made a. hit with the boy. You may either write me or address your answer directly to Vance, whichever you choose. Thanks a lot for your patience with me in all this correspondence but I wish we had a boy like Vance coming out of Downs High every year. Sincerely, Gil Pence
