It was he all right, but he has made no definite plans for staying there. We will probably be down again shortly after our final examinations to look for a room. John plans to spend the summer in Nevada working in a gold mine, I am taking advantage of a half- hour off between jobs to write this letter. KANSAS CITY . MO. April 2, 19359 va Dear Doctor Allen: It seems to me that you have become quite a "oad-about."” Every time I see an article in the paper about you it is from a different city. John Hallberg and I are now deep in our second semester of work at Junior College. We both finished the first semester with better than a "C" average. Next week John plans to go to the state De Moley Basketball tournament. Although our Westport M. E. team ended in | fourth place in our league it had the distinction of loosing five games by one point, The coach of our team, "Ken" Cormany, former Kansas City Life player, is quite pleased with John's improvement this season. John and I should like to have the opportunity of talking with you again some Sunday in the near future, preferably a week or two after Easter. The "Soso" job is developing in fine shape. Although I won't be able to make a salary my first summer, Mr. Touton, has offered me a fine commission on each boy I can get to attend, With the help of several friends I have worked up a formidable mailing list of more than thirty prospects. I write on the average of ten letters a week in connection with my sales campaign which should surely bring some results. The “old bank account" is starting to get fat again for since Christmas I have been working 40 hours a week on my old job at the Star. : I close with the hopes of hearing from you SOON» Sincerely _o lunvon H heone This is simply to aclmowledge receipt of your letter of April 2nd in Dr. Allen's absence. Allen, Dept. of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Doctor Allen: I am writing you again, but this time in regard to David Payne. He is hoping to come to K. U. next semester. It is, however, without his knowledge thet this letter is being written. David told me that he plans to write to you soon to try to make an appointment for an interviens and I thought that a littie advance information about him might be of interest to you. In high school he was an All Star (All City) forward for Westport. Since his graduation he has played two or three seasons of independent ball with such teams as College of — DeMolay, Cassanovas, and a church team. David has more fight than any one player I have -ever played with, but, according to him, he feels that he stands much room for improvement in the line of fundamentals--something you are certainly qualified to give him. In all truth I am able to say that since the. time I moved to Kansas City David has been my "ideal" not only in the line of athletics, but as a real fellow. Sincerely turn Bo A tert? December 15, 1938 Dr. F. Cs Alien, | Department of Physical Education, Kansas University, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Doctor Allen: Shortly after the receipt of your recent letter in which you enclosed a carbon copy of a letter sent to Mr. Louis Touton, I had a talk with him about Camp Soso. After consideration of the matter he offered me a summer at his camp with transportation and expenses paid, but no salary. He did, however, offer me a substantial commission on each boy I could induce to attend the camp. After some consideration and virtual assurance of a loan in the event I am unable to get some boys to go, I accepted his offer. I had a long talk with my father recently and told him of the low tuition rates offered to residents of Kansas. He assured me that he would give the matter serious consideration. John Hallberg and I are playing on an average of three games a week. Thus far, however, we have the low winning percentage of about .40, but we have lost three games by only one point. John has been scoring an average of three baskets a game and looks much improved over last season. — May I again thank you for using your influence to aid me in getting my job with Mr. Touton, and for your interest in John and me. Dr. Fs Cs Allen, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Mr. Allens By this late date you have, no doubt, started school at Ke Ue. Hallberg and I started to Junior College more than two weeks ago. At present I am takings shorthand with no credit, Bugiish with three hours credit, accounting with three hours eredit, speech with two credit hours and am carrying five hours of Am@érican History, a total of thirteen credit hours. I failed to get the lab course I wanted and was forced to fill 1 Wit hievory. If my classes aren't closed out, I wili get One Of my required labs out of the way next semester. Your book, "Better Basketball," proved to be quite inter- esting. ili read everything but the description of the plays and part of the medical training. The starting of school was greatly responsible for my failure to read those parts. I have also taken your "Push-up prescription" every night and morning and have added some leg exercises. I think, however, that Hallberg is falling down on the job, and that a letter or a stern word from you might be just the thing to straighten Dom oab. Ge is, [ think, suffering from a slight case of ‘too much money and too little responsibility. Can you give me some information, at your convenience, as Go the rules or laws covering the establishment of residence in Kansas? JI am willing to go as far as adoption if it will be worth my while as far as expenses go. I have been working after school on my old job at the Star, but as the work was to be temporary, I secured an N. YY. A. job. I also have two Saturday jobs at the Star. For the first week of school [I was quite depressed. My bank account almost hit Mrock bottom” but it has started to rise again. Realizing full well the amount of work that will be piled up for you at this busy enrollment season, I do not expect an acknowledgement of this letter for some time. Thank you very much again for all your interest in a “Bench- warmer" with high aspirations. Sincerely,
