Dwight, Kansas. Sept. 2, 1YSe. ‘Dry F. 6. Allen Physical Education Dep't. Kansas University Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Dr. Allen:. I wrote to you last spring concerning Harold Wright's enrolling at Kansas University. He has been down and talked to you, has made application for N. Y. A. aid, and his application has been accepted for an amount of $18.00 per month. He has just been in to see me and is rather down- heartéd because he just can't make it on this ammount. I wrote you last year as to his abilities in basket- ball and track so I won't go into detail again in these matters. Suffice it to say that I feel absolutely confi- dent that you could definitely develop in this boy a. guard comparable to Pralle of a.couple of years ago. I realize that this is saying quite a bit but this boy has “more ability than any high school player I've seen and I, myself, coached Ervin Reid who is playing with the Aggies, for three years, and I've seen all the best teams in the state during the last decade. I wouldn't make this statement unless I was certain of my recommendations. I have promised Harold that I would try to help him obtain some additional work for his board and room. I have suggested that he try to get this additional work, enroll for the minimum number of hours a semester to keep him eligible and plan on taking five years to go through college. Could you assist in finding him such work down there, perhaps in some fraternity or sorrority house? I know that you assist many of your worthy athletes down there in obtaining more work than N.Y.A. provides for. I am thinking, at present, of the Givens boy, whose situa- tion I am somewhat familiar with. I assure you, Dr. Allen, that this boy is worthy of anything we can do to assist him, because he is both an exceptional student and athlete. I am grateful for what you have done for him and would be exceedingly grateful for an early answer to this added request. Respectfully yours, oel Ne. Dear Dr. AlleH: Thank you very much for your letter of the 27th instant in regard to our student and athlete, Harold Wright. I gave Harold the information that same evening and he seemed much happier than he has for some time. His situation is rather unusual. He is the son of parents who, though they have never been wealthy, have had a nice income and have been good spenders. Having lost this income and most of the little property they had accumulated, and having been relegated to the rank of "relief workers" has been hard on their pride and more so on Harold's than any other member of the family, I believe. He had practi- cally given up the intention of going on to school, I believe, and that would have been unfortunate for him for he is an excellent student and remaining in the en- vironment in which he would fine himself here after graduating from high school, would not be very elevating. Now he is looking for employment for the summer and I do hope he can find enough to enable himeto get started. I'm certain that if he does get started and you get to work with him some in basketball, Dr. Allen, you'll agree with me that he has great possibilities in that sport. And you'll never find a more sincere or cooperative person to work with. But the purpose of this letter was to thank you. loam 20 tmcerested in this boy that it is difficult for me to write concerning him without becoming a trifle verbose. oa tin i i J il it iE i : ED Dea i fi iB jaggl 3a tp i Wie ie fd i ; seq lh ott i iy ip | iiaika pio ru / ma ie ie il ii ate fies, 3 a ree s i g@ 88% init aa iH ai WH td ne . Dear Dr. Allen: The boy that I have been writing you about, Harold Wright, will be participating in the Kansa s Relays Interscholastic Meet tomorrow. He will be competing in the Broad Jump in the Class B division. a S¢iii believe that he-is really worth any small effort which could he made in his behalf to enable him to attend school. Dear Dr. Allen: I am today sending in to the Summerfield Scholarships Committed a recommendation for one of our senior boys, _Harold Wright By name. I am writing to you also, because this boy is not only an outstanding student but also an outstanding athlete and he majors in your sport, Dr. Allen, basketball, I know the Summerfield Committee is not es- pecially interested in bringing athletes to Kansas, but thought you might be interested in this boy and might be able to exert some influence, if not with this committee, elsewhere to bring this boy to Kansas University. This boy is one of the best students I have had in _high school. He is in my opinion the smoothesé high school basketball player I've seen. He is 17 years old at present, stands just over 6 ft., and weighs about 170 pounds. His playing has been responsible for carrying us as far as the Regional Tournament last year, and in winning the Morris County League and Tournament this year. I know that he has the ability to make any Big Six basketball team, and I'd like to see that be K. U. I've only had one player here before that I'd give this recommendation and that was Ervin \ Reid who is now playing at K. 5. C., Manhattan. Wright is a better player today than Reid was as a Senior at Manhattan High where he moved after playing three years under me. He is big enough, very fast on the floor and his greatest strength lies in his ability to get the ball off of the backboards, both offensively and defensively. Unless I can make some arrangeménts for him to get through college--he'll have to make it on his own resources-- at Kansas University, he'll probably attend Kansas State and waste his time on a mediocre basketball team, just as Reid is doing. He is also an exceptional baseball player and tied for second in the broad-jump at the state track meet at Emporia last year with a leap of somewhat over 21 ft. I hope that you can find some way of helping influence this boy to attend Bi Ve ry trul rs, Joel N. Martin, /Prin. Dwight Kural High School Dwight, Kansas. HIGH SCHOOL BOARD FACULTY W. L. Dear Dr. Allen’ I wrote to you on February 20th relative to the chances of obtaining some work for Harold Wright, a senior in our school and an excellent student and also an outstanding athlete in the fields of basket- ball, baseball and track. I1 received a reply from your secretary on Mar. 14, but have heard nothing further. I shan't go into a repetition about the vir- tues of this boy but merely wish to give you a few names of persons who have seen this boy play basket- ball and invite you to inquire from any of them. Mr. Ralph McAtee, Coach, White City, Kansas. Mr. Pike, Coach, Wilsey, Kansas. Mr. Bradley, Coach, Council Grove, Kansas. Harold Wright took the Summerfield Scholarship tests in Salina a little over a week ago. If he doesn't make one of these scholarships, is there any possibility of obtaining work so that he may attend K. U. If there is, I'd appreciate hearing soon, as I know the benefits generally obtained by searching for such things, early. uly yours, gel NY Martin, Prin.
