Change them back if you wish, 0 ty AMERICAN | 'S PUBLISHING 19 BEEKMAN STREET © NEW YORK August 5, 1940 My dear Dr Allen Tnpank you for your letter and its detailed statement of affairs. Most interesting. I was just kidding about the Times. The real reason, no doubt, was that it was Saturday evening, when the paper goes to press earlier. About 10 o'clock, I guess. That would make it only nine o'clock in Kansas City; too early for any definite news. It is possible ‘that a very late edition of the sport pages actually did have it. It was not in my paper, and I get a pretty late run, but sometimes there is a later one. There would be no shutout on the Times, I can assure you; any more —— there would be on the KC Star. My | son is now living in New York; he did live in Louisville ten years. After his trip to Europe--bicycling--he decided to stay on here, the city of his birth, but he is not satis- fied, and does not like New York at alls I suppose he does © find it quite a contrast to Louisville, where there is a different type of people, and where he knew everyone of consequence. He was president of the University of Virginia alumni down there, and used to collect dues from Ambassador Bingham, among others. You must have had a pleasant trip to Chicago, even if it was a short one; the objective is everything. Well, back to the guide. We have about 300 team pictures and I went through the list of captions yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, arranging the sequence and details for the printer. We are compressing them as much as possible, but I am afraid the book will be a healthy size anyway. Paper, and — are at top heights again. AMERICAN SPORTS PUBLISHING CO. 19 BEEKMAN STREET * NEW YORK July 29, 1940 ie My dear Dr Allen 2 ; think Enclosed you will find the Partner article. i don' t/much of it. In fact, I don't think anything of it. In the first place, there should be the box score of least the final game, and it might not be amiss to have the semi-finals. However, the final game would be enough, If this is such an important event, there should be more detailed information. However, I doubt if it IS an important event. I thought all I had to do was to look in the great New York Times and get the details, but, believe it or not, there is not a word in the Sunday Times. That's how much attention was paid to the championships. Even Catholic prep school scores are listed, put not the NCAA! , However, no kfdding, don't you think, considering the importance of the event, there should be a better story? Hinkle of Indianapolis wrote the Easterm event, and he is off on some figures. I had to write to gim today. Well, as an interhude,l hope you and Mrs Allen had a nice trip to the Windy City? JI hope you did not fry on the streets. We have had some very hot days recently, but my son says it does not compare with Louisville. The Ohio bottoms certainly can get steamed up. | ! About Harold Keith. I was sorry after I mailed the letter that I had sent it, and tried to recall it; but it had gone. I shall -go through it again, and 1 guess we shall not need to cut any- thing. Of course weishall send him a proof. We always to to most contributors. It is so easy to make an error. I had one chap today who sent in a belated foot ball story, which I had written mydelf when I did not hear from him. I had a play that Was at variance with his account, and thought I may have made a istake, but according to the newspaper account of a local i i was right. It is so easy to slip. | It is an awful job trying to pick up the odcs and ends. I had to get after the YMCA for holding back matter. One picture of a com- mittee member is missing, and there are all sorts of niggles. I spent all day yesterday--Sunday--arranging the copy of a portion of the book, and it is slow work. Too much careless ness in thie world. .- es . Sa oa AMERICAN SPORTS PUBLISHING CO. 19 BEEKMAN STREET * NEW YORK I had to laugh at your reference to Leighton Housh. If you think there is too much in his article, you should see what I DO cut out. He certainly gets the snickersnee. That Eastern Intercollegiate article that Keith speaks about maybe is not much in Oklahoma but really does mean something in the Ivy country, especially as the origin of the college game was in that orb. I can't very well do anything about Ralph Morgan's article. Ralph Is just saturated with basketball, and I should as soon cut my arm off as cut Ralph's matter. You may think you are a basketball bug--maybe Mrs Allen does--but Mrs Morgan used to tell how Ralph postponed his wedding on account of some plans of the U of P team that came up at the particylar time! Did you ever meet Mrs Morgan? . She died a few months ago. She was a very fine character, and they were very congenial. He has a daughter,a young woman just of out BrynMawr, and his boy's picture is in last year's book in the U of P team, of which he was manager, a post that his father held years previously. Privately, take a look at the Partner article, and let me know what you think, If you are on the spot, send it back to me, but get the box score details to make it look like something. Coming back to the 4 pages of records. I had expected to get the 5 pages into one this year. Sometimes we leave them out altogether and print them separately for local circulation around here; other times they fill out where we have left space for material that does not come to hand. It all depends. This certainly does string out. When 1 get a typewriter in front of me, there is no stopping. So, let me know what you think; and in the meantime, best wishes, as always-—-.
