AMERICAN | 'S PUBLISHING 19 BEEKMAN STREET © NEW YORK August 5, 1940 My dear Dr Allen Tnpank you for your letter and its detailed statement of affairs. Most interesting. I was just kidding about the Times. The real reason, no doubt, was that it was Saturday evening, when the paper goes to press earlier. About 10 o'clock, I guess. That would make it only nine o'clock in Kansas City; too early for any definite news. It is possible ‘that a very late edition of the sport pages actually did have it. It was not in my paper, and I get a pretty late run, but sometimes there is a later one. There would be no shutout on the Times, I can assure you; any more —— there would be on the KC Star. My | son is now living in New York; he did live in Louisville ten years. After his trip to Europe--bicycling--he decided to stay on here, the city of his birth, but he is not satis- fied, and does not like New York at alls I suppose he does © find it quite a contrast to Louisville, where there is a different type of people, and where he knew everyone of consequence. He was president of the University of Virginia alumni down there, and used to collect dues from Ambassador Bingham, among others. You must have had a pleasant trip to Chicago, even if it was a short one; the objective is everything. Well, back to the guide. We have about 300 team pictures and I went through the list of captions yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, arranging the sequence and details for the printer. We are compressing them as much as possible, but I am afraid the book will be a healthy size anyway. Paper, and — are at top heights again. So, with all good wishes to Mrs Allen and yourself, and once more thanking you for your letter-- Faithfully yours
