Our office has sent out the official assignments but I want to be sure that there have been no changes \ 5 cerely YOHS , ic alicia , L. Ee Menze, Secretary LEM: JH Big Six Basketball Coaches in your schedules, Mre Gwinn Henry Director of Athletics University or Xansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Gwinn: I am submitting to you for your approval the basketball schedule as tentatively arranged by m@ée I believe the tig-Six Conference schedule has been approveds We have had great difficulty in scheduling the games with Oklahoma A, and Me becau se after we had them scheduled here at Lawrence, Mre Raymond Nichols, the Chancellor's Exeoutive Secretary, stated that there was a lecture course that evening and we could not use the auditorium. That forced us in a position of scheduling the Oklahom Ae and M. game after the season is closed, on March 11, to be played here at Lawrences. We are playing Oklahoma As and iM. at Stillwater on February 17s ‘The games with Fordham, Temple and Loyola have been approvede That leaves but the one gane with Wichita University that is not approved, which we scheduled between semesters on February 4« ‘ : I might state that our guarantees of receipts fron Stillwater jast year was a few dollars in excess of $1000, so the Oklahoma Ae and Me game, so far as we are concerned, is a money maker for us, while we | give them $400 with an option, but the guarantee is always taken because our income is less than the $400. Consequently, we made $600 net off of the Ae and Me games ' : ; _ Wiehite University has been angling for a game and while at Wichita I agreed with Mr. Gebbart and his Athletic Board to play the Wichita University on February 4e They insist that we play a double header; the varsity playing the “ichita University varsity, and our B. _ team playing their fresimene They are to give us a $300 cmarantee with oe iy estimate is that our income will be between $600 | and $800 because the Wichita boosters are getting behind this game, and as the game is to be played in the Forum, their home court, we should have @ great crowde ‘They insist that we play a double header for the $300 guarantee and since B games are legalized in the BigeSix, and since we have played 5 ganes, I believe it would be a fine things Bspecially since Kansas did well in the Big-Six playoff, and too, it will give us an opportunity to develop some boys who do not get to play on the regular Mire Henry Page Two Auge 28, 1940 I would like to have permission to play a short B team schedule from you and the Athletic Board. Basketball made quite & sizeable sum of money last year and since we cannot play any outside games here at home for profit, I have constantly followed the lucrative scheme of playing away from home and placing a gurantee that will net financial return. I believe I am not selfish in asking this permission since Kansas basketball has always made money and since we scheduled games to make moneys For that reason I would appreciate this permissione Very cordially yours, Director of riveted Education and Recreation — Varsity Basketball Coach FA: 1g UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS BASKETBALL SCHEDULE 1940241 (Big Six Conference) Oklahoma at Norman January 8 Iowa State at Lawrence January 13 Missouri at Lawrence January 16 Kansas State at Manhattan January 20 Nebrasin at Lawrence February 10 Missouri at Coluabia February 21 Kansas State at Lawrence = February 25 Nebrasia at Lincoln March 1 Iowa State at Ames Oklahom. at Lawrence (Non=conferance) Oklahoma Ae and Me at Stillwater February 17 | University of Texas at Lawrence December 9 and 10 Pordhan at New York Decenber 28 Tenple at Philadelphia Desushey 30 Loyola at Chicago | January 2 Oklahoma Ae and Me at Lawrence March 12 Wichita University February 4 t notice tint our gine at Lamrunce is schotiled for ae h Sth, Saturday night elles Ge Simos tnt are ha tine Play wae" a Friday night is aia es ike we om larch sis 0A iestlinn uk wee eid siisatin oh ene es ‘eduesday, Jammry Sthe Of course that takes us amy oe ene ey in the welts | I will greatly appreciate it if you oan change to Marveh 7the Will Will you advise me at your earliest convenience?
