I have the two programs that you sent me, and your letter quoting prices, but I am unable to locate the poster easel bearing your schedule. If it is not too much trouble for you I would greatly appreciate your sending me another of these posters. We have here in Cape Girardeau one of the best printing establishments in the country, the Southeast Missourian. The Company retains its own artists and has its own engraving plant. For the easel bearing the schedule the cost for 500 plus 50 envelopes was $27.50. For either the rectangular or the basketball shaped programs 1500 for each of two games cost $65.00, $32.50 per game. I am wondering if you saw Bill, our youngest, in Columbia a few nights ago when your team played there. He is there in the School of Journalisn. A "way back when" gab fest would really be good. Under separate cover we are sending you a packet of printed material relative to basketball in the kingdom of Southeast Missouri. TI thought you would be interested in the easel carrying the home schedule. I meant to write you some time ago when I noticed the article in the "Saturday Evening Post" about you. I was interested to note how the son is starring on your team. Extend to him my heartiest congratulations. I imagine he is a chip off the old Allen block. I note that your team is leading the pack again this season. It seems to me that that would grow monotonous. I noticed an item on the sport page a few days ago to the effect that you are to coach baseball this spring. When the sun shines warm and the Kansas winds are reduced to spring zephyrs, I should like to be with you for a few days so that we could demonstrate to those boys how this baseball trick is turned. You may not remember that I am an old-time insider when it comes to baseball. Mrs. Parker joins me in the very best of good wishes to you and Mrs. Allen and the rest of the family. UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS LAWRENCE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION December 20, 1941. Dr. Forrest C. Allen, Varsity Basketball Coach. Dear Dr. Allen: On the night of November 24 Marvin Sollenberger injured his knee rebounding a ball off the backboard. It was the same knee that he had trouble with in high school and junior college. He was leaving for home the next day, on his vacation. He has had treatments from different doctors and only one seemed to make the proper adjustments to enable him to continue play. He had confidence in this doctor and knew that by taking treat- ments from him while he was home, that he would be able to play upon returning, which he was. To me, this seemed to be the practical thing and was o.ke'd by me. Since he is a very valuable man to the team, I consider this the correct decision to make. Cy Alves Director of Physical Education and Varsity Basketball @oach Kansas, University. Dear Dr. Allen, A few weeks ago I presented a bill to you through vour secretary. I have inquired of Earl Falkenstein as to what action had been taken and a counle of days ago I learned that mv bill had been rejected by the University because I had not received advice or medical treatment from the university hospital. The injurv which I received while practicing basketball the afternoon of November 23 is not a new one. The carti- lage in mv knee first slipped when I was a senior in high school. The school fitrnished a doctor who handled any of our athletic iniuries. I naturally went to him to save ex- penses, but in the long run I assure you there was no saving. This particular doctor was a medical doctor and he treated my knee for about two weeks by anplying diathermy and weights to my les. At the end of the two weeks I was still moving around only by the aid of crutches. I had heard of the ex- cellent work of Dr. Shook, an osteopath, so I decided to see if he could heln me. I remember very plainly when I walked into his office with the aid of crutches and after fifteen minutes treatment I walked out of his office withont crutches. Since that time I have never hesitated a minute Before goine to Dr. Shook when the cartilage in my knee has slipped. I would estimate that the same injury occurred five or six times during the remainder of my senior vear and one year of funior college ball. Most of the time I had to wear a brace on mv leg, but it was a handicap and not entirely successful. T had the pleasure of working out with the K.U. basket- ‘ball squad when I attended the K.U. Relays in the svring of 1939. Vou were kind enough to work on my leg at that time and explain your training svstem which you use to prevent the trouble which I had been havins. I have been at K.U. two years and am well on my third vear, and this is the first time my knee has bothered since transfering from junior college to Kansas University. I am grateful to vou for your attention and treatments which you have given to me, and T certainly don't feel that my recent misfortune was a result of any failure on your part. TI am happy and lucky that it has hannened only once in three vears. However, T am entirely disappointed and thoroughly dissusted in the manner with which the Tniversity has handled mv request for reimbursement of a mere eight dollars which I had to pay for treatment by Dr. Shook on my knee. At the time TI hurt my knee vou were out of town. Had you been present I have no doubt but that you could have done the same work for me that Dr. Shook did. The reason for my not going to Watkins Memorial Hospital was that I didn't care to spend a couple of weeks under diathermic treatment and still have the same injury after the treatment that I started with. Since I was going home the next day for Thankssiving vacation I could see no reason preventing my seeing Dr. Shook while I was heme and I thought that if high schools and junior colleges could handle such situations that surely a state university could also do the same, My parents have worked hard for every cent that they. have ever had, and if they had any extra money I might not be working most of mv way through college. The fact re- mains that thev have sacrificed throughout mv emtire ed- ucation so that I might participate in athletics and it seems to me that the action 6f the University in refusing to pay my bill is an insult to say the least. Perhaps the University does not feel that mv service# as a basketball plaver is worth eight dollars and maybe they are right. At anv rate I do not intend to continue giving my services, knowing that in case of intury I am just a "has been" and must look out for mvself and pay my doctor bills until I can get into good enough condition that the University feels they can use me again. Sincerely LL Marvin A averes fot lang
