Holding is personal contact with an opponent that in- terferes with the opponent’s freedom of movement. NOTE—“‘Guarding from the rear’’ which results in personal contact is a personal foul. See Comments on the Rules, page 34. Officials are requested to pay special attention to this style of play. The mere fact that the defensive player is attempting to play the ball does not justify ‘im in placing one or both arms over his opponent’s shoulder, if by so doing he causes personal contact.
