Dear Russ: I want to write and congratulate you on the wonderful ex- hibition that your boys displayed against us in Municipal Auditorium Thursday, February 5th. I have seen some teams nearly as hot, but no hotter than your splendid outfit. We looked pretty poor, but I think it was in contrast to the wonderful sharpshooting your boys did. Please don't let your boys get tired again. Or maybe I can get my outfit tired onces If I could I would be extremely happy. Russ, one of the Navy boys after the game came up and wanted a basketball. Perhaps I should have given it to him but somehow I thought it was just one of the boys who wanted a ball. It is unusual for me not to accede to a request, but in college we had discontinued this practice long ago, and I didn't give it to him. However, I am having our trainer mail ' the ball to you and you can turn it over to whomever you like. It‘is yours anyhow, but somehow I did not choose to give it to him that night. You will receive it ina day or s0e Congratulate all the boys on the spirit and genteel skill that they employed, together with their high qualities of athletic leadership. EX-HOOSIERS AID GREAT LAKES IN EATING INDIANA Menke and Andres Star in 41-36 Victory. Bloomington, Ind., Dec. 12 [Spe- cial] With two former Hoosier stars as chief gunners, the Great Lakes ‘Naval Training station basketball ,team defeated Indiana, 41 to 36, here last night. It was Bill Menke and Ernie Andres night, so-called by the Indiana stu- ‘dents, who welcomed the return of ‘the former Hoosier stars, and they re- . sponded with 20 points between them, Navy Takes Lead. Menke was given a great ovation y the Indiana crowd of 4,000 as he ft the floor early in the second calf. He was forced out for fouls. Capt. Andy Zimmer of Indiana and George Rung of Great Lakes also were ejected on fouls. | The Navy lads sprang into an 18 ito 11 lead with five minutes to play in the first half, but an Indiana rally sparked by Irvin Swanson, Ralph Hamilton, and Dick Wittenbraker, the latter two sophomores, put the Hoosiers ahead, 19 to 18, at half time. Anderson Leads Way. Bob Anderson's scoring spree in the second period, aided by Andres’ and | John Lobsiger’s accurate shooting, soon sent the Great Lakes boys into the lead again. They held a 10 point margin with six points to go in the last period when the Hoosiers again spurted, but could not close the gap. | Hamilton played an outstanding floor game, as well as leading the Hoosier scoring with 10 points. Between halves members of Sphinx _ club presented Menke and Andres, ‘alumni of the honorary social organ- | ization, with scrolls of merit for their ‘athletic careers both here and in the ‘service. Ae BROWN Lieutenant Commander, USNR Public Relations Officer IN REPLY PLEASE U. S. NAVAL TRAINING STATION re GREAT LAKES, ILLINOIS NM3/P10-1 (Copy) On6-6 December 23, 1941 Dear Dr. King: We have developed an outstanding basketball team here at the United States Naval Training Station at Great Lakes, Illinois. As you know, it is meeting leading college teams throughout the Ninth Naval District. its presentation fulfills two purposes; it brings the Navy "home" to the Middle West, showing the type of man needed for the United States fleet. And, by participating in gate re- ceipts, it directly contributes to the Navy Relief Funds, now more vitally necessary than ever before. Because the Navy need is so great at this time, we want the Great Lakes team to play in every one of the thirteen states in the Ninth Naval District, and to play to the greatest number of people possible. In some cases, however, campus facilities are previously engaged, or seating facilities pro- vided a smaller attendance than was anticipated. | To insure maximum attendance when the Great Lakes basketball team meets in the Big Six Conference, we would deeply appreciate further relaxing of conference rules. to permit the use of off-campus gymnasiums, auditoriums, civic centers and indoor stadiums. : This request is being made with full realization of its unusual nature, but we of the Navy believe you will under- stand the patriotic need for funds. Play for Navy Relief directly provides wives and children of men who have sacrificed their lives for our liberty. It, also, serves members of families of Navy men sent from Kansas to the front line of our fight for freedom. I would appreciate a reply at your early convenience. The ruling which we passed is as follows: "In view of the National Defense movement, and in the interest of service morale, each Big Six institution be permitted to schedule such competition as it may deem advisable, and that such competition against service teams be not counted as years of parti- cipation against members of a varsity, "B" squad, or ©: freshman team, nor against the limitation of existing schedules." 1 feel I am correct in stating that our con- ference would welcome the opportunity of assisting our armed forces in any way in which would be possible for us to render such assistance.
