Hope the terms are satisfactory. In one of your recent letters you mentioned the fact that Reeves Peters, your new commissioner, seemed anxious to appoint your non-conference officials. Why don't you write him and have him appoint either Ted O'Sullivan or Park Carrol as one of the officials representing your conference? I will make arrangements with either Bill Harrlow. or Gil MacDonald to serve as second official. May Slst, 1941 Mr. R, F. Williams Basketball Coach State University of Iowa Iowa City, lowa Dear Mr. Williams; Thank you for your very prompt response in which you inclose contracts for next year. I would like to sign the next year's date. And, so far as I'm concerned, the same date suits me very well, indeed. However, the exact date is qependent upon the time of our final examinations after the first semester. Sometimes early next spring we can determine upon the date because your semester and our semester examinations will be set and we can play the game upon a date which would be agreed upon then if this is satisfactory to you. I will be happy to agree to either Gil McDonald or Bill Haarolow for our two- year-agreement. However, Rollie, I was wondering about Major Griffith, the Commissioner of your Conference appointing these Commissioners. Reeves Peters, our new Commissioner, apparently seems pretty anxious to appoint evem our non-conference officials. I'm wondering if we should show them the courtesy of asking them to appoint certain officials that we might select. Ted O'Sullivant or Rark Carrol seem to be about as efficient as any we have. Although Ernie Quigler is aging a little, he still commands the respect and really keeps the game better in hand than any of our other officials. I just submitted the contract to our financial secretary of the Athletic Association for the signature of Mr. Gwinn Henry, the Athletic Director. Mr. Faulkenstien was leath to sign the agreement that each team pay its own expenses. I realize that you and the Big Ten follow this proceedure, but in our Big Six Conference, we have a four hundred dollar guarantee with an option of fifty percent of the same. Things are so uncertain with thewar coming on that I know that the Athletic Authorities will be better satisfied with a cash guarantee. Won't you kindly discuss this with your authorities and write me what you think is the best procedure? I'm returning the agreements which you inclosed. Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education and Recreation- Varsity Basketball and Baseball Coach. In the past we have played road games between December 18 and December 25, and I was wondering if you would be willing to play us at Lawrence some time between this period. I am anxious to agree upon the officials for our game this coming season, and I would like to have you recommend an official from the Big Six. I in turn will endeavor to get the second official from our Big Ten Conference. I recommend Gil McDonald who worked your final game at Kansas City a year ago, or Bill Haarlow from Chicago, If you have any other preference, kindly advise. I still have January 29 open, and if you would be willing to play me at Iowa City this coming season, I in turn will play you at Lawrence the following year. I have already agreed to meet Nebraska at Lincoln in 1942-43 and will be happy to include the University of Kansas on that particular trip. Very sincerely yours, Pek « Niece Rollie-Williams Basketball coach RW:ML Mr. Rollie Williams Basketball Coach the State University of Iowa Towa City, lows Dear Rollie: Our first semester examinations begin on Thursday, January 22nd, and end on Thursday, January 29th. This puts me in a pretty tough spet to schedule @ game with you the 29th, because I may iose one or two of my boys who may be required to stay here for the final day's exam- inations. However, I em going to take a chance and schedule @ game with you at lowe City on the 29th of January, 1942. In your contract will you please make up on a reciprocal home and home begis a two-year guaranteed agreement? Will you also kindly state that we're to play the 1942-43 game at Lawrence, Kansas? I do not know when Mebraske desires to play, whether they desire to pley during the Imas vacation or during the academic year. U. \)° Threat to Scoring Marks By HAROLD CLAASSEN, Associated Press Sports Writer. LAWRENCE, Kans., Feb. 11.— Howard Engleman will.pitch you ‘pennies, marbles, softballs, basket balls. or chalk—just. as. you prefer. And to show why he is the leading scorer in the Big Six basket ball race with an average of 20 points a game the Kansas forward floated up a) dozen softballs to a 3-inch sill above @ door without a miss. He did it with all the ease of tossing pennies at a crack—with the Grand Canyon as that crack. It is this acute sense of co-ordina- tion—his “soft touch,’ Coach Phog Allen calls it—that makes Engleman a threat to every Big Six scoring mark. On the basket ball court Engle- man’s shot is every bit as soft. The ball seems to cuddle up against the bankboard for a full second, peek |into the hoop and then flutter | through the netting. Engleman’s Shot Deceptive. Allen also adds that Engleman’s shot is one of the most deceptive in his 20 years of coaching because of the speed the senior forward dis- plays in going down the floor. And the lazy speed of the ball isn’t increased one bit if it is re- leased with the player off balance. Against ‘Missouri he stuffed in a _two-pointer while falling. Against Wichita University he fired while eae on the floor. It looks a cinch for Engleman to cop the Big Six scoring record. Frank Groves of Kansas State set it at 154 points for 10 games in 1937. Howard has flicked in 102 in five games—which leaves him five in which to add only 56 more he a new mark. During much of the 1940 season he was a substitute because of an injured knee.
