Allen Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: I have been away from the office the past two weeks on @ vacation and when I returned I received your letter. I seems as though we have reached a point where your Athletic Cabinet and ours differ on the terms of the eontract for our basketball games. I brought this matter up in our Athletic Cabinet meeting Wednesday afternoon. They were of the opinion that the games should be played on a flat guarantee basis, as we play other teams. I explained to them that Kansas would draw for us here at Stillwater and that I felt and recommended to them that we pay you 4 guarantee of $400.00 or option of 50% of the net gate, student tickets not to be prorated. This was passed by our Cabinet. We have never played Kansas at Stillwater on a suitable night. We have either had bad weather or had the game too close to another important game on our schedule, which has cut our attendance. I am sure that you will find that you will always get more than your guarantee when you play A. & M. at Stillwater. I hope that it is possible for you to play us under the above contract. Allen Basketball Coach Kansas University Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: The reason I have been holding off on answering your letter concerning basketball schedule is that our Athletic Cabinet feels that we should make a change in financial arrangements of contract. Since the money received for our student season tickets is not prorated to individual sports, but is put in general fund, our Cabinet feels that student. season tickets should not be counted in net gate receipts. Our student tickets are sold to the student at the beginning of each school year and we do not think that any one game on our schedule in any sport materially helps the sale of these tickets. In the past it has been necessary for us to pay Kansas more money fron our basketball account than we deposited into the account for our share, due to fact that student season tickets are not prorated to our basketball account. I would be glad for you to think about this and take it up with your Cabinet if you think it necessary. We are ready to enter into agreement for games this coming season on same basis as in the past with exception of counting student season tickets in figuring option. Naturally, we feel that public season tickets should be counted. I am enclosing copy of our schedule and would appreciate hearing from you at your convenience. Iba Athletic Director Oklahoma *, & M. College Stillwater, Oklahoma Dear Mr. Iba: Replying to your letter of May 28th, addressed to Dr. Allen, I wish to advise that after condidering the matter carefully, I do not believe our Athletic Board would be in favor of drawing up contracts whichwould eliminate figuring the student tickets @ .20 each. I am of the opinion that your student season tickets are not handled any differently than those at our institution or other members of the Missouri Valley or Big Six Conferences. In checking the ticket reports I find that we had a larger student ticket sale at the game played here March 11th than you show on your report, It is, of course, quite obvious that you have much more space to take care of outsiders than we do which prohibits us from ever being able to pay you any very large proration. I, personally, cannot quite understand why you are eliminating the student tickets from the pro- ration when Kansas plays unless you do likewise with the otherteams on your home schedule which, of course, would eliminate entirely the student tickets from your reports. If 4ensas draws a crowd as large as some of your other games I cannot see any just reason why they should not share in the proceeds from the game. “uring the past season we played with some schools that paid us a larger option thah you did and some that came very close to this amount, but we have hed no requests from them asking that student tickets be eliminated from the gross receipts. If the student tickets are eliminated from any contracts that might be signed in the future, it is quite apparent that we would not get more than the guarantee and we can get $400.00 guarantees from several schools that are a shorter distance from Lawrence than Stillwater. I am sure that our Board would be very happy to continue on the same basis as in the past, but I do not feel that they would authorize a contract on any other basis. Very sincerely yours, E, L. Of course your students do not know what schedule you meke and I doubt whether it would be importent from their stand-point if we were ever on your home schedule. _ I quite agree with you that your school hes paid Kansas more money than you have received from Us. This is perhaps true with most of the schools you play, due to the fact that you have a much larger standing capacity than most any other school. However, doubtless you will egree that the other schools make fifty percent of the attraction. i am reminded of the occasion a few years back when most of your Oklahoma papers attacked Kansas end me personally for uet scheduling games with you. I was oognizant of the fact that you had never written asking for a geme. Yet, that did not lessen the barrage. I felt very keenly that any word from you could have set your own local papers right but apparently none were forth coming. . Upom receipt of a letter from you asking for games, we agreed to appear at your field house to dedicate your edéfice with one of our Sophomore teams. We asked for our conference guarentee and nothing more. Nor have we ever been unreasonable. } i now take it that apparently you do not desire to continue relationships which have been very pleasant and which heve afforded some very splendid competition, ir, Senry Iba Page two 44 is not at ell necessary that we take it up with our Athletic Board. Burnside Manager Carpenter Paper Co. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Dear Cob: I have been wanting to write you for a considerable time but the rush of work has kept me from doing go, It seems as though I've had « commencement date every night for about two weeks. I work during the day and then light out to some small town later in the afternoon. I finish my talk about 9:30 or 10:00 and then drive until about 2:00 o'clock in the morning to get home. In addition to this, I'm coaching the Varsity baseball team and thet is quite a chore added to my administrative and teaching work. Cob, what I wanted to write you about was Hank Iba's reticense in scheduling games with us this year. Apparently, he must not have much for next year. Doubtless you know the history of our playing with hin, do you not? When he was at Marysville Teachers, 1 would hear a rumor once in awhile that Marysville would like to play us and then when he went to Oklahoma A & M, 5us Heum and the Oklahoma papers would constantly fill their columns with items concerning the fear of the Jayhawkers against the Oklahoma Aggies. : How mind you, Hank Iba never wrote me asking for a game. But, it was not difficult to imagine the source inspiring such articles. We played Hank two games dedicating his field-house when we had a group of Sophomore youngsters and his was a better team, but we did not side-step the contest. This year, I talked to him in Bensas City and I heve written him two letters and still there is no soap. | If Hank Ibe does not play this year, it's a cinch that we will not play him only when he wants to play. And to, I think it would be @air to all concerned that Mr. Bus Samm know the real truth of the Kansas and Oklahoma relationship. You will remember that I told you that if Mami Iba wanted a game, if he wrote — pure, Ita give it to him. Now by the reverse method, if we played Coach Tba when he was strong, it seems logical to me that we should have no difficulty in signing up for this year. Mr, €. 0. Burnside page two I'm wondering if you, as a good intermittere, could not innocently query Hank and tell him you heard no games were signeé up between Kansas and A & M and you wanted to know the real reason for it. On Mareh 6th, I wrote him confirming my wire in answer to his. This had reference to our game thet we played here, “arch llth. The reference to Mr. Dolman wes to the effect that we had not received the money for a game played Stillwater on Feb- ruary 17th. Last year we waited until August or September to get ovr money, and I cooperated with Mr. Faulkenstein in an effort to collect the basketball guarantee. In regerd to my letter of April 10th, in which I mentioned making mattérs difficult, this reference was made because it was last July or 4ugust before we got our two basketball games settled. The fact I sent in my sehedule shows definitely that we were willing to play, ined I dislike a. I'm ales sending you a copy of the letter I have written him this day. I did not reply to any of the wre except the reply concerning officials for last March. I will be happy to have a letter from you giving me your reaction of this situation. The reason I took the pertinate jab at him that I did in my letter of April 10th, was because I had talked with Reeves Peters, the Sig Six Commissioner, and he had talked with Henry about me. And also, I had talked with Henry and we had agreed to change schedule end he had not done so. Perhaps I was a little ; iey but if I promise a fellow something, I*ll do it, and I ne same thing from him.
