Dear Karl; I am writing you concerning the possible cancellation of the January 24th game vith he Hutchinson Naval Air Station at Hutchinson. I am always happy to schedule games with service nena if we are doing the service a kindness or a courtesy. Personally, I have never had a team subjected to the roughness and the general unsavory attitude by an opponent as was shown by the Hutchinson team here on our court on Pecember 4th. I characterize such tactics as the Naval Air Station team showed as “muckerism"”. Taunts, jibes, on intent to injure, were in my opinion shom by the rep of this tean. \ The coach, Lt. Bill Hennigh, professed a desire to clear up things, but when two of his accompanying men who were rooters, ran out on the court he remonstrated with them, at my insistence, but then turned, smiled, and winked at them after he had reprimanded then. The two men attached to his outfit, who were in uniform, ran repeated- ly out on the court and made violent and unsportsmanlike gestures at the e each time he called a foul. They would hold their noses and ile in Se ee oe an Gee ae cakeaues or ce |e I think some offer should be made to pay their expenses since each outfit was to pay their own, but since we do not go down there it might appear to them unfair to pay their own expenses up here. This is a mentioned for the sake of nctee upataemrm end feir play for the sitors. Personally, I would not lay all the stress of cancellation on too many games. I would rather be frank and if you desire to quote me say that I do not care to subject my boys to the rough treatment and the humiliation that was shown them by older and more powerful opponents who did not show a sporting tendency. I am always glad to echedule service teams if the service teams conduct themselves as good sportsmen and good, rough, tough competitors, but when the field of mokerism is encroached upon then I am of the positive opinion that we should not schedule games. HOGAN end Lt., Air Corps Physical Training Officer HEADQUARTERS Army Air Base Herington, Kansas ee October 1943 Dr. Forrest C. Allen Director of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Sir: Your letter of 20 October received, I believe it best if we arranged our games on a home and home basis, with each team taking care of their own expense. In regard to our game at Lawrence on 1 December, we will either travel by rail or automobile, leaving here in suf- ficient time to play the game there and returning the same night. Since we are approximately one hundred and ten miles apart, the distance involved is negligible. We have open dates here on 28 December and 4 January both Tuesdays and would like to have you take your choice of either. It is safe to presume that a majority of our home games will be played at the Gymnasium on the Base, which is of regulation College dimensions. Trusting that I may hear from you about the 28 Decom- ber or 4 January dates, Sincerely - Jens Vga VINCENT J. end Lt., Air a i Physical Training Officer October 20, 19435. Lieut. Vineent J. Hogan, Physical Training Officer, Army Air Base, Hering ton, Kansas. ‘Dear Lieutenant Hogan: I am glad that it will be possible for you to play the first game at Lawrence on Decerber 1. ao in the evening. I am wondering about your transportation. Would you desire a home and homo schedule, with ensh ton. taking care of their own expenses? We have a game on Decenber 18, so some time a little later than this, either just before or after the Christmas holidays, would suit us better. May I ask where your boys are playing? Ave you playing in the Herington high school, or do you have a basketball court in your recreation building? Sincerely yours, Direotor of Physical Education, FCA:AH Varsity Basketball Coach. HEADQUARTERS PHYSICAL TRAINING DIRECTOR ARMY AIR BASE HERINGTON, KANSAS 18 October 1943 Dr. Forrest C. Allen Varsity Basketball Coach, University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: Your kindletter of 16 October received. I thank you sincerely for the ppportunity of extending an invitation to play at Lawrence on 1 December. While I agree with you that this date is early, I see no reason why we can not accept it. Accordingly I am entering this game for 1 December on our schedule and presume it will be played at night. I hardély know what suggestions to offer you in regards to a home game here but if you de- sire to play one early in the season, may I sug- gest the dates of Tuesday 14 December, or Friday 17 December? In closing allow me to again express my appreciation of your generous cooperation in ar- ranging this December first game and hope that we can arrive at a mutually satisfactory date here. With best wishes for a successful season. VINCENT J. HOG end Lt., Air Corps Physical Training Officer October 16, 1945. Lieut. Vincent J.
