U. S. NAVAL RESERVE AVIATION BASE FAIRFAX AIRPORT : KANSAS CITY, KANSAS ACT-BB=5 Lr ° 10 August 1942 a“ {0 Dear Dr. Allen: So that I may work Nebraska into my schedule, I am wondering uld be kind enough to move up our February Ath date to February Hank and I were somewhat disappointed about the January 29th double header, but, nevertheless, I am sure that you have arranged an attractive double header for that week-end, which should prove to be a great drawing card. I would appreciate you having Earl send me the contracts at an early date. Please advise me by return mail regarding the February 3rd date so I may give Nebraska my answer, With best wishes, I remain, Sincerely yours, » B.. Gat er Lieutenant, (jg), USNR Athletic Officer Dr. Forrest Allen Director of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas 18, &? 3 é é 2 . December 16, 1942. Lt. Jack Gardner, _ U. &. Reserve Naval Aviation Base, Olathe, Kansas. Dear Jack: . For our game with your “Clippers” in Kansas City on December Sth, the Municipal Auditorium-reports a total income of $1577.15. It is my undefstanding that we were to pay the officials’ expenses, and St. Benedict's was te get $40.00. After the deduction of the hall rental it wes ny understanding the net was to be split fifty-fifty. I stopped in to sec the Auditorium people and they said they had the money in the bank ready for distribution. I an wondering if we cannot got this distribution at an early date. Please include with your check a statement by the Auditorium management of income and expenses for our file for the auditor's observation. On account of the curtailed athletic income we would appreciate a check at your early convenience. e Very sincerely yours, Direeter of Physical Education, PCA:AH Varsity Basketball Coach. November 30, 1942. Lieut. Henry C. Hart, Jr., Public Relations Office, U. S&S. Neval Reserve Aviation Base, Olathe, Kansas. Dear Lieutenant Hart: The item of expenses ran up into so much money that we had not planned to bring our band or cheerleaders, and for that reason had planned on using a high school band to cut down expenses. whatever plan Lieutenant O'Leary has regarding the between-halves entertainment is entirely satisfactory to us. .I was more than mildly surprised when I found that Lieutenant Gardner had arranged with Bill Powell and Lou Lower for the game between Schooley's and anothe# team of Powell's choice. When Lieutenant Gardner asked that he be permitted to sub- stitute for the Iowa City “Co- " we were glad to accomodate him, but the same consideration does not seem to be working both ways. The purpose in arranging the high school game was to have an attraction with less of an expense account. High school boys bring their parents, but the Schooley’s team will only be the Schooley's, and St. Benedict's will cost $40.00 more than the 5+. Benedict followers will bring in. Personally, I think it is poor business arrangement and since we are going fifty-fifty with the income, we are not too happy about it. I have talked to Lou Lower and it is now arranged with him that the Argentine team and Rockhurst High will play at 6345. The Schooley's and St. Benedict's game will follow and we will play the last game. By asking the high school teams we will receive the benefit of the band without any expense. I see quite a difference in the financial income as contrasted by the two arrangements. Very sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education, POA :AH Varsity Basketball Coach. NAVAL RESERVE AVIATION BASE GARRNEROSANSAS. Olathe, Kansas November 19, 1942 Dear Dr. Allen: I was sorry to hear that you are not going to bring your band or cheerleaders, but I realize the difficulties of the added travel arrangements. Ina great many cases such travel is practically impossible these days. I have been in touch with Lieutenant O'Leary regarding en= tertainment between halves and have discussed some plans with him. I have also talked plans over with Louis Lower of the Auditorium. As matters stand now we plan to bring down a band and we are trying to arrange for the services of some of the Iowa Pre-Flight-Missouri football game entertainment. I think this will give us a sufficient program without the school bands. Lieutenant Gardner has an understanding with Bill Powell of Schooley's and Louis Lower to the effect that the preliminary games are to be arranged by Mr. Powell between his Schooley team and opponents of this choosing. Powell has been working on this and I thought I ought to let you know as you mentioned a game between Argentine and Rockhurst high schools in your letter to me. We are planning to begin the preliminary game at 7:30 on December 5th, That will allow a sufficient warm-up period in be- tween games. According to latest arrangements our game will begin at 9:15, This is the time station KCKN has allotted to us for broadcast- ing. We plan to introduce each player in a spot light just before the game begins. Lieutenant Gardner and I would like to accept your kind invitation to come up to Lawrence, December Ist. Would you write and let me know at what time the game begins? We can talk over any necess- ary arrangements at that time. Sincergly yours, Henry C. Hart, Jr. Lieutenant (jg), USNR Dr. Forrest C. Lieut. Martin J. Peters, Asst. Basketball Coach, U. 5S. Naval Reserve Aviation a. Olathe, Kansas. Dear Lieutenant Peters: Dr. Allen has received your letter of the 17th, which I am acknowledging in his absence. He is at present in Lincoln, Nebraska, attending a Regional Institute of Physical Fitness Programs, and will be back in the office on Monday. Our games here in Lawrence will start at 7:30 peme, and our players will wear white suits on the home court. At Eansas Gity the University of Kensas team will weer red suits, and will dress in the hotel. We heve noted that the games in Kansas City will start at 9:15, and at the Olathe base at 8:30. Our toam, of course, will wear red suits when playing at Olathe. You will doubtless hear from Dr. Allen after ‘his return next woek. Very sincerely yours, Secretary, Department of Physical Bdueation. November 12, 1942. Lieut. Henry Ce Hart, Jes Public Relations Office, U. S. Haval Reserve Aviation Base, Olathe, Kansas o : ‘Dear Lieutenant Hart: - Thank you for your very good letter o : 5 : E complinentary tickets. I do not think we will need e great many, but I will let you know prior to game time what our needs will be. - I ha@ not planned om bringing our band and cheerleeder. ‘This is rather an expensive item and unnecessary travel is frowmed upon by our national administration. We have been endeavoring to see if it not be possible to use a high school bend. Arrangements are way to have a game between Argentine and Rockhurst high schools, and we thought it might be possible to get one of those high school bands, which would keep down the expenses. I would be very happy to cooperate with you in providing entertain- ment between halves. Since 1922 we have always had entertainment be- tween halves for our games here. We are playing the freshmen on December first, and we believe we are going to have a novel entertainment between halves of thet game. Porhaps Lieut. Gerdner may want to come and scout use If he does, why don't you come along with him? This is a little late to make arrangements between halves, but I ‘would be happy to have the pleasure of going over some of the details with you which I believe could be still worked out in an acceptable Dame? fnd here's another idea. Liéut. Theodore M. O'Leary, 12th floor of the Bryant Building, in Kensag City, I believe could offer some fine suggestions for a patriotic demonstration between halves. I have arranged with Lieut. O'Leary to have charge of the entertainment between halves of the Great Lakes and Pre-Flight School games between the Univ- ersity of Missouri and the University of Kensas, but Larry Snyder called off his entire basketball schedule for the Iowe City boys. Captain Ted - OfSullivan also cancelled his entire schedule for the Reseption Center at Fort Leavenworth. That is why we are playing the freshmen on December first instead of playing the Reception Center. I have tentatively discussed with the high schools the possibility of their bands playing on December 5th. Don't you think it would be well Le to go ahead on that arrangement? Then any patriotic demonstration that we would want to put on could be put on between halves and the band could play before the game and during any lull that might happen during the game. ; Twill be happy to hear from you after you have conferred with Lieut. Gardner. Very sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education, - POAAR Varsity Basketball Coach. “a Sines DBRS aeRO oc i 5 RR Pec aeetge F ¥ J , ' a U. S.
