November 30, 1942. Lieut. Henry C. Hart, Jr., Public Relations Office, U. S&S. Neval Reserve Aviation Base, Olathe, Kansas. Dear Lieutenant Hart: The item of expenses ran up into so much money that we had not planned to bring our band or cheerleaders, and for that reason had planned on using a high school band to cut down expenses. whatever plan Lieutenant O'Leary has regarding the between-halves entertainment is entirely satisfactory to us. .I was more than mildly surprised when I found that Lieutenant Gardner had arranged with Bill Powell and Lou Lower for the game between Schooley's and anothe# team of Powell's choice. When Lieutenant Gardner asked that he be permitted to sub- stitute for the Iowa City “Co- " we were glad to accomodate him, but the same consideration does not seem to be working both ways. The purpose in arranging the high school game was to have an attraction with less of an expense account. High school boys bring their parents, but the Schooley’s team will only be the Schooley's, and St. Benedict's will cost $40.00 more than the 5+. Benedict followers will bring in. Personally, I think it is poor business arrangement and since we are going fifty-fifty with the income, we are not too happy about it. I have talked to Lou Lower and it is now arranged with him that the Argentine team and Rockhurst High will play at 6345. The Schooley's and St. Benedict's game will follow and we will play the last game. By asking the high school teams we will receive the benefit of the band without any expense. I see quite a difference in the financial income as contrasted by the two arrangements. Very sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education, POA :AH Varsity Basketball Coach.
