We are playing Rockhurst in Kensas City on the llth, and I would like to have a few days’ practice in be- tween games. So if it is agreeable with you we will definitely plan to play you here on December 15, and we will play you at Omaha on March 4th. May 2, 1942. Mr. E. 5. Hickey, Basketball Coach, Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska. oe . I do not think it would be a good thing to play our games so close together, say either January 29 or 50, or Februany 2 at one place end February 8 at the other. | I would like to play somebody at home prior to our game with Jewe on December 21. Therefore, I would rather have you on the December date here than to play at your place, if we can arrange it. We ere also figuring on playing Rockhurst College in early December. We will per- haps play t&mt come in Kansas City, so I would like to have one game at home before December 21. I have just received a letter from Dean Swarthout of our Schogl of Fine Arts and he has acheduled a concert on February(Sth in the Auditorium with the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra. Therefore, that date is out of the way as far ag we are concerned this year. So please do not count on it because the Fine Arts people have a priority date. There is a sibility that we might play you in Omaha on January 29°or 30 if our dates with the service teams do not work out. It may be that both of us wili have to make a special trip to Lawrence and to Omaha for our games rather than pick one up on the road. if you should find yourself unable to play on a December date, could you come to Lawrence for a game on March 4th? Let me know what you tink about this at your con- venienoe. ie Sincerely yours, “4. Director of Physieal Education and Recreation FCA:AH Varsity Basketball‘and Baseball Coach. THE CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS OMAHA, NEBRASKA REV. DAVID A. SHYNE, S. J. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS April 30, 1942 Dr. Forrest C. Allen Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Phog: I heve your letter of April 27 and appreciate your suggestions relative to working out dates for next season. Our plans are still tentative in many respects, so it is impossible to be too definite, especially with reference to a pre-holiday game. We have contracts to play here on December 2lst and 23rd. There is a tentative possibility for a West game on December 18th or 19th. Utah has asked us to pley there on December lith. In this event, it will be necessary for us to add additional games in order to finance such a trip. The possibilities that have been suggested call for games on December 12th, 14th, and 15th. Prior to this trip we hope to conclude a previous contract with South Dakota for an opening game in Omaha. Perhaps it would be best to wait a few days longer on the development of these possibilities. I am not too sure that we can have permission to be absent from school the necessary time to work in a trip to Utah mentioned above. I should like to have you keep in mind the date of January 50th in the event the Great Lakes game does not materialize for you. A good suggestion for an Omaha date would be March drd or 4th, should you care to croud it in between your Big Six games. Possibly you would like to travel to Omaha after your game at Columbia. The February 8th date offers a good solution for our game there. Since you cannot play after the 16th of December, possibly a December 17th or 18th date in Omaha would work out in the event our West Coast date did not materialize. I will keep in close touch with you and would be glad to have any further suggestions. I want to assure you that even at the expense of crowding our schedule we will conclude very shortly on dates that will be completely satisfactory. With good wishes and kindest regards, I am So yours, ESH:CC E. S. Mickey Basketball Coach April 27, 1942. Mr. E. S. Hickey, Basketball Coach, Creighton University, Omaha, Nebras!mo Dear Bidiec: © Dee --*«T have had quite a bit of correspondence with Tony - Kinkle, of the mat Lakes Training Station, and we are tentatively planning to play in Kansas City on Jenuary 29 or 30 with the Great lakes team. This is a pretty good money game, and I would rather utilize those dates with them if we can arrange some others with yous | I quite agree with you that since we are playing Iowa State here on February 6th, and you finish two games in Oklahoma ending the 6th, that perhaps February Sth would not be as adviseble a date for both of us if we can arrange some other more satisfactory time. I will have three or four of wy boys on the football team next year end they will be my top liners, but I still believe that we should play one of our games before Christmas. Our examination schedules and our individual schedules mke it pretty difficult for us to arrence a game at a time most satisfactory for both of us. How would the dates of December 15 or 16 suit you at Lawrence, and February 2 at Omaha? we are not permitted to play here after the 16th on account of the preparation for and the giving of the University Vesper religious service on the 20th. We play — - Jowa University here on the 2lst. I notice that you are playing | i Oklahoma Ao & M. at Stillwater on the 5th. The 2nd would be Tuesday Z and since we are playing perhaps a couple of games on the 29th and 7 ‘30th of January, February 2 would give us enough rest between those ‘two games and would still give you three days between our game and your A. & M. game at Stillwater. , I have studied our respective schedules and since we do not end our games until March 6 and you end yours on February 27, I do not see how we can get any games in at the fag end of the sousone = ae 7 With all good wishes, I am Sincerely yours, | : Director of Physical Education and Recreation _FCA:AH Varsity Basketball end Baseball Coach. THE CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS OMAHA, NEBRASKA REV. DAVID A. SHYNE, S. J. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS April 17 P 1942 Dr. Forrest C. Allen Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doc: I was glad to have your letter of April 4 and to know definitely that we could figure on a home and home series for next year. Your suggestion to wait a little while on fixing definite dates is ouite satisfactory since we have three return contracts and the dates on these have not been closed as yet. Our examinations begin on January 20 and end on the morn- ing of January 30. We can play at home on this last date but hardly have time to travel for a game away. We have a game in the east for January & and hope to add two more en route. Since school opens on January 4 it is difficult for us to work these games in on our return. Previous to this trip we may catch up on return games at Denver and Utah and also have a contract with South Dakota for an Omaha date. This Utah trip is still pending and may be postponed for another year. In this event a date prior to Christmas may be 4 good solution for one of our games although we usually catch some of the teams travelling through on early trips and would not want to pass up any of these situations. I have correspondence with Minnesota and a couple of coast teams but nothing is definite right now. Please let me know how your dates progress and I will keep in close touch with you also. With kindest regards and best wishes, I am, Sincerely, s E. S. Hickey Basketball Coech ESH:h April 4, 1942. Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska. Dear Eddies Thank ycu for your letter of the 2nd cohen, enclosing a copy of your schedule. I had written to Rollie Williams suggesting that we _ Play our game with Iowa before his conference schedule starts. I don't know what he will do, but I want to get that date cleared up first, if I can, because there is always difficulty ee OO eee ee ee Oe play a retum games. In case that doesn't happen, whet would you think of playing one of two games prior. to the Christmas holidays? ie could play either at Creighton or at Lawrence. What is your contemplated early season schedule? I doen't want to crowd too many games in during our playing season if we could get one or two played early. I have often suggested to our Big | Six members that we play some games before Christmas in our conference, but I can never quite get them to agree. If you will send me your examination dates - when you . cannot play - that will help me in picking dates. We have discussed tentatively January 30 for our date with the Great Lakes team. February 8, the other date you suggest, would be all right for Lawrence, I think, as we are playing Iowa State two days before, but I do not think it would interfere in any way. This Great Lakes game may not work out, but if we could wait a little while until we get some word from Iowa we will try to work it out. I am sure we can get together satisfactorily on dates. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS April 2 ’ 1942 Dr. Forreet C. Allen Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear "Doct" I fully intended writing to you from New York with refer- ence to next year's schedule so I was greatly pleased to have your letter of March 40. In comparing your Conference dates with our own I should like to suggest January 50 at Omaha and February 8 at Lawerence. There may be other possibilities but I believe these dates present the better possibilities. I am enclosing a schedule of our Conference games. We could not travel on January 30 because of the close of our examination week. I hope this will not be your problem also for this date. On February 8 we should be returning from our Oklahoma trip and although it might seem most inadvisable to play all these games on one trip we will try and work it out some way. I shall look forward to an early reply and any suggestions you have in mind. I would like to have seen your Kansas City games and I believe your squad made a wonderful show- ing for our district. Allen Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doctor Allens We find that it is necessary to ask that you release us from our obligation of our contract for a basketbail game which was to be played at Lawrence, Kansas, the night of December 21. As you know, the Big Ten Athletic Directors went on record in a recent meeting as making it prohibitory to make any trips in the future where puliman travel was involved. This along with difficulties of transportation makes it next to impossible for us to fulfill our contract at this time. We ask, therefore, that you place this contract aside and we will fill it after the duration. We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience but it is absolutely necessary. Sincerely yours, E. G.
