Allen, Director of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Phog:- It is my understanding that the New York City schools which use the Madison Square Garden court have already sent word to their prospective opponents on this court for the 1942-43 season that the Gold- smith X9L ball would be used for all games. This note is just a reminder and a follow up since I have at the present time taken delivery on the balls which will be used during the coming season. This ball was the type which the coaches of the local teams requested me to order. It is tentatively planned to release the complete Madison Square Garden basketball schedule on or about October 20th. We would appreciate it if you have not already released your schedule if you could hold up any reference to your eastern trip until after that date. Lee Blaser, manager of the Buffalo Athletic Club, has been kind enough to again make the facilities of that. club available to the college teams which are plan- ning to compete in Buffalo during the 1942-43 season. I feel that the arrangements and accommodations offered by his organization are superior to any hotel accommoda- tions available and would suggest that you avail yourself of this opportunity. Allen, Director of Physical Education and Recreation, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Phog:- I have made a rather comprehensive study of the hotel situation for the college basketball teams that will visit New York this coming season. Following this survey I would like to recommend that in making your plans for the New York trip you plan your stay at the Hotel Bel- vedere, 319 West 48th Street, New York City, of which Mr. George A. Fechtman is the manager. I feel certain that this arrangement will be to the best advan- tage of the visiting teams and completely satisfactory in all ways. The Belvedere is semi-residential in character and has slightly lar- ger rooms than other hotels on the West Side. It has the outstanding advantage of having an entrance on 49th Street which is just across the street from the entrance which is used by the players in entering Madison Square Garden. The hotel has been recently redecorated, and Mr. Fechtman assures me that he will place your squad all on one floor in adjacent rooms at the rate of $2.00 per man for twin-bedded rooms with bath,.etc. This is a remarkably good value in rooms at this time since most of the hotels have raised their rates and some of the lar- ger transient hotels, according to newspaper reports, face being taken over by the Army. An additional reason why I feel that this hotel will have an advantage to visiting teams is its accessibility to the Garden for players in the event that it should be necessary for the players to dress and use their hotel rooms for showers after the game. The play- ers could simply step across the street in their warmup suits without running the danger of catching cold if staying at a hotel further from the Garden. The uncertainty of the fuel situation here in New York makes it likely that we might have to curtail on our heating which would affect the hot water supply in our dressing rooms. In addition, taxi cabs are bound to be limited and the nearer the boys are to the Garden the better off it will be for your squad. Mr. Fechtman will undoubtedly get in touch with you concerning reservations. I hope that you will be able to make your stay in New York at the Belvedere, Sincerely ? 4 J 4 / ay) NI: FP Wa August 24, 1942. yf Mr. Ned Irish, § Rockefeller Plaza, New York City, N.Y. There is one interesting angle, Ned, that might make for publicity. In 1905 I played with the Kansas City Athletic Club when we beat the Buffalo Germans in a series of three games in Kensas City for the so-called world's championship. Allen, Director of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Doc:- The only place where there will be a game played on Monday, December 28th, is in Madison Square Garden. I imagine that we could get Fordham for that date, although they are also scheduled to play in the Garden on Saturday, January 2nd, and it would mean two games in the same week, I do not think, however, that Monday and Saturday will be too much, In order to play on the 26th and 28th, therefore, it would be necessary for you to schedule a game in Buffalo or Philadelphia. On Saturday, December 26th, Temple would be available in Convention Hall, Philadelphia, and St. Bona- venture in Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo. Either would be on a direct line and entail no additional expense in transporta- . tion. My honest opinion is that the gate receipts in Buffalo would probably exceed the Philadelphia gate receipts by 20 to 25%. Southern California will be playing Canisius in Buffalo on Saturday, December 26th. There would be no difference in the reimbursement of expenses for either place as we would conform to our arrangement of 1940, The auditorium in Buffalo seats about the same as Convention Hall in Philadelphia, but playing conditions are much better. Please let me know as soon as possible whether you prefer the Temple game in Philadelphia or the St. Bona- venture game in Buffalo. If it was possible to schedule #ordham in the Garden on Saturday night, December 26th, would this make any difference in your plans. You could play this game and return to Lawrence to give you plenty of time for work during the vacation period prior to your conference opening. Naturally, for a single game the quaranteed reimbursement would not be as high as for two or three games, but I am certain that the reimbursement of expenses in the amount of $1250 for the single game here plus your part- icipation would more than cover expenses of the trip. The Saturday night date during the Christmas holiday «period has been the most desireable from a gate standpoint the last few years. Last December we drew over $19,000, after deducting Federal taxes. 1 feel confident that your participation in the game with Fordham on this date would exceed $1250, so that you would get a total of $2500 or more for the single game. Since your note earlier in the month I had been setting up your date to fall during the same time as your trip of two years ago. Fordham is quite anxious to schedule your team on its holiday date in the Garden. This would be the first game for Fordham in the Garden according to our schedule for the home teams. There will be two dates in the Garden prior to the holidays, Saturday,. December 12th, and Saturday, December 19th. City College and Long Island University have the use of the Garden court on Saturday, December 12th, with New York Univ- ersity and St. Johns having the court on Saturday, December 19th. It is my understanding from the officials at these institutions that they have entered or completed negotiations for games on this date. City College plans to play Oklahoma A. & M. on Sat- urday, December 12th, as it has done for the past three years. Long Island University has been in touch with Brigham Young for a game on the same date. New York University has completed arrangements with Syracuse University for its game on December 19th, and Joe Lapchick of St. John's informs me that he has been in touch with Bruce Drake of Oklahoma University to continue their game on December 19th. I do not know whether City and Long Island have definitely closed with Oklahoma Ae & M. and Brigham Young, so I cannot be very specific on the possibility of your coming here on that date. If yo can adjust your contemplated games between Christmas and New Year's I am sure that the arrangements could be satisfactorally completed without delay for a game with Fordham in the Garden, Canisius in Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo and Temple, St. Joseph's or LaSalle in Convention Hall, Philadelphia.
