By Deb Gruver Kansan staff writer The two-way plan was deferred at last week's commission meeting so the commissioners could further plan plans before coming to a decision John Langstrum, a representative for the Chelsea Group, the firm developing the riverfront project, said last night that the traffic plan had been studied extensively during the last month. The plan will cost about $100,000. The city will now consult traffic engineers about the start of the construction. Because the riverfront project is scheduled for completion within the year, Lungstrum said it was time for a decision. "It should be adopted," Lungstum said. "Two-way traffic is in everybody's best interest. This project is our project, it is Cheslae's project, it is the city's project, it's everybody's project." The two-way plan to the outlet shopping center was opposed by a traffic consultant hired by the city. At last week's meeting, Paul Berkley said that Chelseaates firm said that he did not agree with the traffic findings of Chelsea The future reliability of the two-way plan has received the most debate. But if in 20 years traffic became a problem again, Longstrom sailed the city would only have to move the direction of the traffic signals. Mark Creamer, a Lawrence plumbing contractor, said the city needed a plan that would work now and in the future. "We don't want a situation years from now where people are saying, 'We don't want this.'" Saturdays," Creamer said. "Let's saturdays waste $100,000 tonight." Creamer earlier had submitted his own plans for a traffic pattern. When the city hires a traffic engineer to work out the details and design of the two-way plan, Creamer's plan will be taken into consideration. "The points Mark (Creamer) are valid points." Mayor Bob Schumann Commissioner Dennis Constance also said Creamer's plan was valid and asked that it become public record. Commissioner Sandy Praeger said the important factor was to go ahead with the project. “I’d like to see us move on tonight,” Praeger said. “I think that we’re doing the right thing.” The city was directed to consult engineers for recommendations on the design of traffic from Sixth and Seventh Avenue, Seventh and New Hampshire streets. In other business, the commissioners unanimously moved to establish a seven-member task force on recycling Goals for city recycling were originally supposed to be drafted into a resolution, but after much discussion it was rejected. It took the form of a motion. "I am not ready to vote tonight that we are going to have a curb-side pilot program," Praeger said. "We're going to be formalizing this if we draft a resolution and I'm not ready for that." The commission voted to adopt the task force goals with the condition that implementation meet its approval. But Schumm said they did not expect a curb-side recycling program to start on day one. Curb-side recycling is essential weekly pick-up of recyclables. Commissioners also approved three site plans and adopted the 1985 Uniform Plumbing Code. BEFORE YOU BUY Check the KANSAN. Our advertisers might save you money. Story Idea?
