control experience in all its various guises and degrees, and embracing the American model of learning and individual initiative," he said.
Craig Fuller, the vice president's chief of staff, said "no" when asked if the vice president was calling Dukakis a socialist. "That would be going too far." Fuller said.
In Akron, a cheering, flagwaving crowd overloaded a cavernous airport hangar to hear Bush say that "my opponent, excuse me from using a dirty word, my opponent, the governor of Massachusetts, keeps telling everyone how bad things are."
Once again, Bush defended his campaign advertising against Dukakis' protests that they were full of lies and distortions.

Dukakis defends policy; rebukes Bush defense ad

The Massachusetts governor toured friendly territory in the San Francisco suburbs in a state where he found discouraging polls showing GOP rival George Bush leading in the presidential race.
Aides said Dukakis would be interviewed by Dan Rather tomorrow on CBS's Evening News program. The session is expected to last 14 minutes — extraordinarily long for an evening news show. His running mate, S蒂利 Lloyd Bentzen of Texas, is to be interviewed on the same program for eight minutes today.
He appeared on ABC's "Nightline" program last night for a 90-minute interview with Ted Koppel, who was meeting him in Denver. Dakiks' wife and children appeared on Phil Donahue's program.
Dukakis responded by taking almost every opportunity to appear on network television, while refusing to hold a news conference or take questions from reporters traveling with him.
"Now they've got a tank ad — it has all kinds of missatements and outright falsehoods," Dukakis sald. "We Democrats are for a strong defense."
The Bush campaign's tank ad uses a videotape of Dukakis wearing a helmet and riding in the turret of an M-1 tank at a defense contractor's plant in Sterling Heights, Mich., last month. The ad suggests he is weak on defense.
Dukakis said the tank ad was part of "the distortions, the lies and the misrepresections we've had in this campaign — and there have been many."7
