12 Tuesday, October 25, 1988 / University Daily Kansan Wellness services free Stress management, nutrition analysis programs for students now financed by University grant By Merideth Relph Kansan staff writer Students who find themselves becoming stressed during the semester may be able to find some cheap, healthy relief at KU's Wellness Center. The recipient of an $11,500 University grant, the Wellness Center can now offer its services at no cost to students. Maureen Borland, Lawrence graduate student and co-director of the Wellness Center, said the center and its counterpart, the Fitness Clinic, had used the grant money to expand their services, which included a computerized stress management program for students. The Wellness Center is in 138 Robinson Center and the Fitness Clinic is in 122 Robinson. "Before, we had a room and a computer, but we weren't able to do anything." Borland said. For example, a nutrition analysis cost $6. "Now, we've got the stress inventory and the nutrition analysis and some relaxation tapes, and it's all free," she said. The stress management test lets students pinpoint what might be caused them to feel stress. Borland then helps find ways of alleviating stress. we want to raise the level of students' awareness of how stress affects them." Borland said. "We encourage relaxation, let people avoid." One way students may relax at the center is through listening to relaxation tapes, which include a recording of ocean sounds. The center provides 'R. Arvella Frazier, Lawrence graduate student, is the other co-director of the Wellness Center. She said that while the flow of students seeking stress relief had been steady this semester, it probably would pick up when final weeks arrived. "There seem to be more who come in at stressful times during the year," she said. "More students have the opportunity than have in the past few years." The nutrition analysis available at the Wellness Center is for those students who think pizza and burgers are offering them a well-balanced diet. The computerized, comprehensive nutrition program considers a person's height, weight, age and activity level in its analysis. "It helps us guide you to well- rounded diets." Borland said. The Wellness Center also has brochures on nutrition and exercise as well as information on AIDS, mental health, vitamins, environmental safety and alcohol and drug abuse, among other topics. to use the stress inventory or nutrition programs or relaxation tapes by calling the Wellness Clinic at 864-4076, extension 21. Students also may stop by the Wellness Center between 8:30 a.m. and noon Mondays and Wednesdays, or between 8 a.m. and noon Tuesday and Thursday. Students may use the Wellness Center if they are available, but Fridays are reserved for students with appointments. atlong other topics Students may make appointments While the Wellness Center evaluates a student's lifestyle, the Fitness Clinic determines overall physiological health. David Pai, Overland Park graduate student, is a co-director of the Fitness Clinic, which also offers its services at no charge. "When someone first comes in, we'll do their resting heart rate, blood pressure, height and weight." Pai said. "We can also do lung capacity, grip strength, flexibility and body fat percentage. Then we can estimate a person's current level of fitness." Pai said that several physical fitness classes used the Fitness Center for tests, and that recently the Lenexa fire department had the clinic administer its annual physical tests for firefighters. Part of the test also includes estimating aerobic capacity with a brief workout on a treadmill or exercise bicycle. The entire test takes between 45 minutes and an hour and a half, depending upon whether a student includes the aerobic workout. Appointments are preferred, and may be made through the Fitness Center office at 864-5049.
