Rescuers who have hacked a string of about 62 breathing holes in the ice in the direction of the nearest channel of open water were having little chance in coaxing the whites to follow them in a shallow shallow blockying their path. The California gray whales must get over the shoal and through the ice ridge to reach an open lead or arch. The whale is the fastest completely open water is 200 miles away in the Chukchi Sea. The ridge, formed by the collision of two ice masses, is a jumble of ice chunks, some the size of small houses. It stretches for miles, and at points is a quarter-mile wide and looms 15 feet above sea level, said Rear Adm. Sigmund R. Petersen, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Pacific Marine Center in Seattle. Biologists said they were considering the possibility of airlifting the animals to open water. "We're having a net built right now to carry them," David Withrow of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Laboratory in Seattle said Sunday. Ship carrying hundreds sinks The Associated Press MANILA, Philippines — A passenger ship believed carrying more than 500 people sank during the height of Typhoon Ruby and at least eight survivors have been rescued, the Philippine coast guard said today. Carlos Go, general manager of Sulpicio Lines which owns the vessel, said he had received a report from his agent in Tacclan, the ship's destination, that eight "alleged survivors" had been found. Lt. Rey Esquerra, duty officer the coast guard station in Cebu, said his office was informed by owners of the vessel that four vessels had been found near Mashatevor Island southeast of Manila. He said the vessel was carrying 451 passengers and 60 crew members on board from Manila to Tacloban on Loyte Island, it lit radio a distress call Monday. Production of flu vaccine delayed PHILADELPHIA — Manufacture of the nation's supply of flu vaccine has been delayed up to two months and supplies will be short during a crucial time to protect patients, pharmaceutical firms and public health officials said yesterday. The largest producer of the vaccines, Wyeth Laboratories Inc., St. David, Philadelphia, usually ships the bulk of its nine million doses by The companies blame the situation on a late notification from the national Centers for Disease Control on the type of vaccine needed this year. The CDC said the problem stemmed from the fact that some of the viruses causing this year's flu took unusually long to cultivate for vaccines. The Associated Press This year, Wyeth will be sending vaccine to physicians through early to mid-November, said company spokeswoman Audrey Ashby. It will take additional time to get people in for their shots September. October and November are considered the best months for immunization. The highest risk group for the flu, and traditionally last on the list of those immunized, are older people living in close quarters in big-city nursing homes. This is also a problem with the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. They need their flu shots by middle to late November, he said. Doctors prefer to immunize them last because their systems do not hold on to the antibody as long as the systems of younger people, he said. Drug manufacturers said they were late in gearing up vaccine production because of late notification from the CDC on the strains that needed to be targeted this flu season. Also, some of the strains targeted by the CDC require a vaccine that takes longer to produce than usual. Marshall Molly, spokesman for Parke-Davis, another flu vaccine manufacturer, said the notification usually came in February, but it didn't come until April this year. Suzanne Gaventa, an epidemiologist with the CDC, denied that the federal agency was late in notifying the drug companies.
