14 Monday, October 24, 1988 / University Daily Kansan Candidates in 2nd District differ in goals and style Slattery is proud of service by Barbara Joseph Kansan staff writer The only way Kansan Bill Gates and his partner were able to break through the bureaucracy of the Food and Drug Administration to open their own medical equipment company is by being part of a small group Jim Slattery, D-Topekha "Slippery really came through for us," Gates said from his office in Atchison. "If it wasn't for him, we still be fighting the FDA. I wish he do become governor, although I don't have to do without him in Washington." Slattery, 40, is running for re-election to his fourth two-year term as U.S. Representative for the 2nd Congressional District. He said he is proud of his service to constituents, but if elected this could be his last term. Jim Slattery "One of the most satisfying things about this job is helping thousands of Kansans with their individual problems, burdened with his office tasks." Slattery said he wanted to address the $150 billion federal budget deficit. Other priorities include improving health care in rural Kansas and passing a 1909 farm bill. Most important of all, Slattery said, was to resist the next administration's attempts to slash student financial aid. "Last year, President Reagan recommended a 25 percent cut in education funding." Slatter said. "We need to stop that because it didn't become reality. It's critical that we make sure every young American who wants to finance an education can. The federal government has the responsibility to make of that." As Slattery looks into the future, he sees the need for a telecommunications policy for Kansas. "We need to get in as much fiberoptic cable spread in Kansas as quickly as possible," he said. "We have incubations medium of the future. We need to make sure that information on Wall Street is available here at the University, as it is there so we can compete." Meinhardt stresses diversity By Barbara Joseph Kansan staff writer Phil Neinhardt, the Republican candidate for U.S. Representative, 2nd Congressional District, is running a campaign that is both critical of Democratic incumbent Jim Slattery and strong on goals. "Saturner is smooth with grandmother statement that say nothing and another that say something what he is for." Meinhardt said in an interview last week at the Kansas University. He accused Slaterry of accomplishing next to nothing during his six years in Congress and of misrepresenting himself. Phil Meinhardt Meinhardt, a 53-year old retired Air Force officer from Topka, said his experience in defense, technology has allowed him to qualify him to challenge Slattery. Stanley H. Stauffer, the chairman of the board for Stafer Communications, Inc., said that Minhardt had an impressive military background "He should be eminently qualified in international relations because of his experience in the armed forces," Stauffer said. Meinhardt said he served in the Air Force and Navy for more than 30 years, spent more than seven years in space and missile technology and was on the top of his economics class at University of California at Los Angeles. Munthard said he was against raising taxes, but he also wanted to reduce taxes. To do this, he recommends a line-item veto for the president and a line-item veto for the governor. "I'm optimistic we can handle the present debt without a lot of sacrifice." he said. Another item on Meinhard's plate is Social Security, which he wants to protect from government cuts. He also vows to maintain federal subsidies. He would support education by supporting "Star Wars" research, which he noted is ongoing at KU, and by increasing student financial aid "Education begets education," Meinhardt said.
