Mondav, October 24, 1988 / University Daily Kansan Kansas artist uses people as paint in cola artwork Beanfield used as the canvas By M. Meredith Relph Kansan staff writer Kansan staff writer They were the Cola Warriors. OTTWA — They came, nearly 100 strong, braiding chilly showers. and early milestone showers. But they were not KU football fans. Saturday's 'Ottawa Beautiful Cola War,' which culminated in the creation of two cola cans in a field, was the brachial law of Lawrence artist Stan Herd. Herd is noted for his paintings depicting life on earth; he artizes the earth as his palette. Among Herd's artisanal endeavors are the 30-count likeness of Kiowa Indian chief Satanta, which he planted in field near Skakола, and a couple of others from Eauphar, both of which use different crops to create color and contours. Herd organized the Cola Wars in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the Ottawa Community Arts Council. The project, featuring the huge likenesses of two crushed soda cans, one pepsi and one Coca-Cola, is conceived with a notable difference from Herd's earlier crop-art work. The cans were made of people The cans were made of people. "It was kind of the logical place to move with my work." Herd said. The color was added by the participants, some of whom were out-of-towners who traveled to Ottawa specifically to be a part of the event. A white outline of the cans and the aerial on them had been made in metal for the participants to guide the participants and Herd, who gave directions from atop a cherry-pink canopy. "I think people are talking about art on a different level after they see my work." Herd said. "I'm glad to be able to get people involved in my art." Lew and Dora Timmerman and six of their friends came from Wichita to Coleo Warriors after reading about it in the Wichita Eagle Beacon. "We're all involved with art in Wichita and decided to make this part of the law we take each fall to the Lawrence." Dora Tormeerman said. "I had seen his work before and, this sounded like so much fun," she said. "I thought. There's a chance to be part of an artiste masterpiece." Chester Torguson from Minneapolis, Minn., also was a part of the Coke can. "Actually, we were in Ottawa visiting our daughter, and heard about all this," he said. "We just thought we'd go to see what it was all about." Herd originally anticipated theoperation of about 1,200 people butwhom were not there. Afterarriving, gaps in the cans were filledin with colored T shirts stretched Sally Austin and Marty Aita, both native residents, brought some ancient stone tools to the dog Breester. All three were wearing red, promoting their half of the breeder's lineage. "We started out in blue," Austin, said, "But then I thought it doesn't drink Pepsi, so we changed to red. Even Brewster drinks Coke." Courtney Pence, a fourth grade student at Haworth Elementary School in Ottawa, and her friends Debbie Mcnature and Rochelle Servavus, both sixth graders at Ottawa School, were all part of the Pessi can "But I'm the only one who drinks Pepsi," Servatius said. Pence said she wanted to take part in the Cola Wars because she was interested in art and it was an amazing act, actually be in someone's creation. Her friends said they were excited about the prospect of being on television as part of the event. Herd said he used his unique method of expression to provoke people to think about art with an open mind. "I couldn't have done it without you," he told them. Part of Herd's message to the participants in the Cola Wars was to be aware of the importance of recycling cans and bottles. After the participants had completed the cars, an accomplishment that was met with cheers, shouts and applause, they thanked them for helping. "It's a subtle thing, but the image and the event stay in people's minds," said Mr. Browne. "I give people a little information and spark them to do it something."
