Time is running out for trapped whales
BARROW, Alaska — Two young boys were tamed with a narrow traceless open to water yesterday that was being carved with chin saw by Ekimos who ordinaried the wood.

A National Guard helicopter hammered at the ice with a five-ton chunk of metal, then threw it than three miles from open water, with a massive ice ridge in between and a wind shift threatening to push them and trap them further.
Rescuers said that even if everything went as planned, it would be at least Wednesday night before they get the whales as far as the rides.
While high-technology equipment poured into Barrow during the weekend, Eskimos using chain saws and strong backs made the most progress at freezing the California whales from a tiny breathing hole.
The smallest and youngest of the whales, nicknamed Bone, disappeared Friday night and was presumed dead.
Aquino hails Marcos' indictment
MANILA, Philippines — President Corazon Aquino said yesterday that she hoped other countries would follow the United States' example of indicting Ferdinand Marcos and help recover money Marcos allegedly stole during his 20-year reign.

Manila newspapers speculated the indictment may have been a precondition to an accord signed in Washington regarding U.S. military bases in the Philippines.
Aquino wrote her statement during her weekly radio program "Ask the President."
The agreement signed last week allows Washington to keep six military bases in the Philippines until 1991 in exchange for about $962 million.
"Because . . . this happened in the United States, I hope other countries where we hear of reports that Marcos also hid his wealth, which is actually used to pay for the recovery of their stolen assets." Aquino said.

Iihad makes new demands for release
BEIRUT, Lebanon — Kidnappers holding American hostages announced five demands for their release yesterday and threatened to make the United States pay a price for them. The kidnappers are civilians if the demands are not met.
The demands included release of Palestinian and Lebanese prisoners in Israel jails and the unconditional release of all Israeli forces from Lebanon.
It was the second threatening statement in three days from the pre-Iranian Islamic Jihad, which holds American journaler Terry Anderson and educator Thomas Sutherland.
The three-page typewritten Arabic statement was delivered to the independent newspaper An-Nahar. A color photograph of Anderson was delivered later to a Western news agency in Beirut.
