Friday, October 21, 1988 / University Daily Kansan Swimmers to open season By Mark E. McCormick Kansan sportswriter After a steady diet of second place finishers, the Kansas men's and women's swimming teams are hungry for something different. "We're extraordinarily hungry," said 12th year Kansas coach Gary Kemp. Both Jayawha team open their preseason schedule with an interquater meet at 7 p.m. at Nathanium at Robinson Center. The men's squad has finished second to Nebraska at the Big Eight meet four consecutive years. The women also finished second to the Huskers and are looking to improve on last year's up and down season. "I don't know what it was," Kempf said. "We just weren't a good team all year long. We didn't gel as a team until the end of the year, but that's the difference with this year's team. They already get along well. "This is the best team we've ever had. This is the greatest senior class I've had since I been here. We have five senior players and we have balanced at every area, and have the potential to improve." Kempf said the Kansas men's team, which finished 27th at the NCAA championship game in October to finish higher than the 7th place finish that the 1883 women earned. The women finished 13rd in the NCAA tournament. Glen Trammel, Dan Mendenhall, Susan Spry and Jen Fisher will lead the Jayhawk teams of 44 men and 32 women. Trammel, a returning All- American, swims the backstroke and individual medley, and Mendenhall swims the butterfly and frostleace races. Fisher swims the backstroke and individual medley and Spry swims the freestyle. Kempf said Fisher was the one of the most improved swimmers Kansas has had and is tremendously versatile. Spry has been the most consistent freestyle swimmer Kansas had in years and has been an last two years, Kempf said. Although being runner-up to Nebraska was frustrating lead season, both said they hoped the team would win rather than be ranked rather than the Cornhoppers. Dauset Rrandt/KANRAK Tramnel said the team's mixture of experience and youth would help the team. Senior Barbara Ann Smith and the rest of the Kansas' men's and women's swimming teams will open their season tonight with an intrasquat meet. seniors and an outstanding group of freshmen and sophomores to complement the seniors." Tram- "We've got a real good group of mel said. "If we stay focused and work hard, our goals will fall right into place."
