Sports University Daily Kansan / Friday, October 21, 1988 11 LA overcomes injuries, odds to win Series The Associated Press OAKLAND, Calif. - Orel Herisher and the hurilin 'Los Angeles Dodgers did everything they weren't supposed to do, stopping the Bash Bunch and staining the Oakland Tigers to win the World Series in five games. Hershiser's four-hitter closed out one of the most dramatic turnarounds and biggest upsets in baseball history. "I feel like I'm climbing a mountain every time I out there," Hershey said. "It's very tough in the big leagues. It's a war out there." He shut down Joe Cancee and wrote what he had seen in the Series, 2-for-4 and allowed just five earned runs in his final 10 innings and was voted the winner. Hershiser, voted the 'Series' Most Valuable Player, was human enough to give up two runs for a change but not a goal. The sudden misadventure A's for the suddenly nudges A's. Mickey Hatcher and Mike Davis each hit two-run homers that made it 4-1 in the fourth inning. That was plenty for Herstherr, who pitched Los Angeles into the series with a shutout in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series. He New York Mets and then shut out New York on three hits in Game 2. The Dodgers, copied by injuries to Kirk Gibson, Mike Marshall, Mike Scioscia and John Tudor, weren't expected to stay in the same ballpark as the Athletes. Instead, Los Angeles won, 4-2, and wins in the masters of the field. It was the sixth World Series championship for the Dodgers, who became the first team to win two championships in the 1980s, their last win in which they also endure a streak in which 10 different club fans had the last 10 wins. "For two years, we suffered a great deal, and now the Dodgers are back on top." said Dodger manager Tom Lasorda. "They have to be an athlete, you have to do it. They showed you what you can do if you want something bad enough." Los Angeles, the most active team in the league, they reduced their number to 7-38 mark the last two years, the greatest improvement of any National League team. David Brandt/KANSAN Hershei struck out nine and walked four. He was tough when it mattered most, twice getting Cancelo with two runners on bass. Canseco grounded out to end the third with Oakland trailing 2-1. In the eighth, after Stan Jawar's IBI single pulled the Athletics within 3-2. Hersher walked Daver Henderson and the plate as the potential tying run. But Hershiser gans Canseo, who led the majors in homers and RB, on a popup and struck out Dave Parker for escape. "I looked at the dugout and gave them the high sign, like 'I'm OK,' Hersher said. "I know I got our bench awfully nervous." Carnesco first 1-for-19 — hisless to the 2007 NLCS, McGwire, Oakland's other big basher, went 1-for-17, his only hit a game-winning win home run in the "There's one big explanation. Dodgers' pitching shut us up," said Oakland manager Tony La Russa, who had hundred years in baseball. If you make quality pitches, it doesn't matter what the hitters (are), you're not a pitcher. The Athletes lost for the first time in four World Series appearances since moving to Oakland. They won three straight championships, beginning in 1972 and ending with a five-peat victory over Los Angeles in 1974. The Dodgers are 5-13 overall in World Series play, including 5-4 since moving to Los Angeles. The awkward Hatcher, again in the lineup for Gibson, continued to lead a charmed life. He homered in the first inning after Franklin Stubbs' single, and put Los Angeles ahead for the 10th time in 12 postseason games. Hatcher's home run was his second of the series; he hit only one in 191 at-bats during the season. Hatcher later singled, made him 4-4 for the first time this week. This week after previously going 2-for-1 in his career against him. Davis, signed as a free agent last December after being released by the Rams and paying in the fourth. Hatcher led off with an infield single, diving headfirst to beat third baseman Carney Lansford's throw, before the next two games. On a 3-0 count, Lasarda gave the hit but instead of take, and Davis got the kill. The referees who had only two home runs during the season, she deep dive into the season, and missed. NBA show goes on without Danny Clipper vets say top pick will produce By Arvin Donley Kansan sportswriter Although former Kansas All-American Danny Manning was a no-show at Allen Field House last night, the NBA exhibition game between the Los Angeles Clippers and New Jersey Nets was played. Los Angeles Clippers forward Joe Woll, right, challenges New York Rays player Rudy Roy Hinson. The team plays last night at Allen Field House. The Clippers are now 3-1 in the preseason and coach Gene Shue said he was pleased with their performance. But he also said that he would not assess his team's skills against the Giants' rookie friend Charles Smith and second-year guard Reggie Williams onto the court. Manning is involved in a contract dispute in which he is holding out for more money. Smith and Williams are nursing injuries. "He could play any number of positions." Shue said. "He could play small forward, power forward or even possibly center." "It will really be nice as soon as we get the whole group together, that it's my biggest problem." Shuey said of the group, and its group is playing, but I'm realistic enough to realize that this is just the preseason and teams are trying out things and this is not the real season. "When you von get into the season," When Manning does sign Shue said he is unsure where he will play because of his versatility. One thing for sure, the Clippers are anxious to get him on the team, regardless of where he plays. Former Colorado forward Scott Wilke, who is struggling to earn a spot on the Clippers roster, said that Manning instead of against him. "He's going to be a key part of this team because he is so strong," she said. "We can't wait for him to get here because he's going to help us. Once he gets home we couple disrupt the meeting, once we know what he can do and how we'll fit around him, he's going to make everybody's job a lot easier." "I got tired of trying to guard him last year," said Wilke. Nixon, who hasn't played in two years because of a torn tendon in his left knee and a torn muscle in his right ankle, said that he was confident that Manning would sign soon and make a big contribution to the Clippers. "He's going to definitely sign," Nixon said. "It's no surprise to me because I've been through this a couple of times. "I've seen him play a little and I just know from the little bit I've seen that he's a great player. I don't think he does one thing that is so dominant, other than just being a great all-round player. With the best team that's going to be a welcome addition to have that type of player." Wilke and former Oklahoma forward Anthony Bowie, who is trying to make the Nets, both said in a letter that they play in Allen Field House. "I told my roommate that even though there would be only hc if the Moning played, that it would probably be the biggest crowd we play in front of all presseason basketball ball around. "Wilke said. "I thought about going to Kansas, so it was nice (to play in the field house)." Bowie said. Ear infection ends tour for Brown The Associated Press SAN ANTONIO, Texas — San Antoio received a painful ear infection from a possible ear infection, has returned home from a Kansas trip after experience with a previous infection. Brown, who missed a presession game against the Milwaukee of the 2014 draft, and our problems, had joined us on a road trip to Memphis, Tenn., and to Manhattan, Kan. but to Antioch yesterday after feeling ill. "My hearing has deteriorated. I have a buzzing in my head, dizziness and it's just getting worse." Brown told the San Antonio Nightly. Brown, who coached the Kansas Jayhawks to the NCAA championship last season, joined the Spurs for a five-year, $3.5 million contract. Danny hyped but pro debut still awaited By Tom Stinson Associate sports editor Former Kansas All-American Danny Manny was scheduled to challenge for the No. 1 seed for debut for the Los Angeles Clippers last night in Allen Field House, but despite leagues, last year's game were failed to another game in the Kansas arena. Manning was featured in local television and radio advertising and even appeared in the Clippers' media guide eight times, including a game with the Clippers kept him from playing last night. Thus, the game between the Clippers and the New Jersey Nets, last year's worst NBA teams, was called a disappointment by many of the 3,427 spectators and "a joke" by Mike Munice, arena coordinator for Sports Productions Inc. "I think everybody here is disappo- nished," Minnis said of the Clippers' 118-10 victory without Man- ney (who missed a game) and Danny Manning (not show), it be d the same disappointment as not having Michael Jordan with the (Chicago) Bulls or Karreen (New York) Lakers. Manning was the top pick in last summer's NBA draft, but he has yet to sign a contract with Los Angeles. He reportedly is asking for $8 million over four years, and Clippers are offering $8 million. The game was agreed upon early last summer, Minnis said, and originally featured two former players, Jimmy Bell and Valentine, a Jayhawk All-American in 1981, was drafted by the team in last summer's expansion draft. "When we started, it was Darnell and Danny," said Richard Konzem. Kansas assistant athletic director Daniel looked like an real attractive game. Minnis was canceling last night's game was considered because of low ticket sales, but both teams said they had to go on. Konzem did say Kansas would consider having a similar event in the future, but he emphasized the importance of the main attraction would appear. "You want to be real careful about making sure that if you had an attraction like Danny, that you wouldn't be he's going to be here," he said. Cyclones have more bite; KU wants taste of victory Kansan sportswriter By Jeff Euston Before the Kansas-Iowa State game last season, Iowa matched the matchup as a "battle between two toolless IOWs." Bulwark Land is more optimistic this year. IoWA State will build Kanisah to mormore it to Cyclan Leu. * "I think we've borne got a couple of teeth." Warden said laughing. "Besides, a pitt bull can still gum you to death." weak teams or not, in USA State bombed Kansas 42-28 last season. Kansas coach Glen Mason said he wasn't going to make a decision. "I wasn’t here last year, so I don’t know." Mason said. "I know we’re going to do our best and the thing we’re doing The Cyclones are 3.3 this season, already matching their season victory to their season. Mason is not in the playoffs yet, but he is in the season. Not even Walden expected Iowa State to have a chance to move past the 500 mark this late in the season. "I am surprised, to be honest." Walden said. "Before the season started, I thought we'd be 2 right now and I season ended." Sophomore Je Shudak, Iowa State's most reliable place kicker, missed four long field goal attempts in the game. The Cyclones, facing their intrastate rival on the road in Iowa City, Iowa, four weeks ago, played the highly-touted Hawkeyes to a 3-12 until the third quarter when Iowa scored a touchdown. "In fact, we could easily be 3-2 i right now if we didn't give up that late score to Iowa." The Cyclones record includes a 21-3 victory at Missouri last week and a 36-13 victory against Tulane in their first match. Iowa State continued to play well on the road at Missouri last week. The Cyclones took advantage of six Tiger turnovers to win their first game away from home since the victory in Lawrence last season. "Iowa State got some big plays," Mason said. "Missouri had a lot of turnovers. I realize that. But once you get that opportunity, what do you with it? Do you make the most out of them fold? I give them credit. They've way to win." with the victory over Missouri, Iowa State reclaimed that telephone Trophy, which was first donated by the Missouri College of Agriculture in malfunction in the coaches' headsets enabled the benches to hear each other. The trophy travels between Missouri and Iowa. If the Kansas coaches are able to listen to Walder tomorrow, they might learn of his plans for a nudhuddle offense that worked successfully for the Cyclones last week. "We started running without a baddle because a crowd noise." Walden said. "I think we caught Missouri by surprise. It tends to screw up what the defense had planned to do. It doesn't allow them to use their game "Jim Walden knows everything in the book," Mason said. "You've got to be ready for everything. You get ready for that anyway. You never know when somebody's going to spring something on you." Mason said the Jayhawks would be ready if Walden decided to go to a no-huddle offense again this week. Walden chose to use the no-huddle offense despite being forced to play junior college transfer quarterback Bret Oberg in place of starter Derek DeGennaro, who was injured before the season started. Oberg, wearing Iowa State's plays on his wristbands, completed 10 of 14 passes for 141 yards and three passes in the first half. Kansas quarterback Kelly Donohoe said he was looking forward to facing the Cyclone defense. In last year's game against Iowa State, he threw for 281 yards. The key to a Kansas victory, he said, would be the Jayhawks "Our offense hasn't been productive as we'd like," Walden said. "We've played a little close to the vest so Oberg could get our confidence. I think we're improving." "I think we're in the same boat they were in last year," Donohoe said. "They played a lot of younger players last year, like we are this year. They're up in numbers now and they're playing good. "We're going to have to play well. We can have to execute well and not make mistakes. If we can get our running system working, we're going to win." Mason said that Troy Gregory would start at cornerback in place of Hodney Harris, who has an injured shoulder. Starting linebacker Tony Barker practiced yesterday, but will not start tomorrow because of a right knee sprain. His spot will be filled by freshman Cavan Howard and senior Mike Long Despite the injuries, the Jayhaws said they believed they could beat the Cyclones. "I thought we played a good game Saturday," Kansas wide receiver Quintin Smith said. "We just couldn't get it in the end zone. Iowa State is a team we think we can play if we play like we did against Colorado, we should win."
