Louisiana Purchase-23rd & Louisiana Phone 843-5500 Lawrence KU physician to lead study of genital warts By Terry Bauroth Kansan staff writer a physician at Watkins Memorial Health Center is shearing a fight against an epidemic of a sexually transmitted disease that leads to cancer In May, Henry W. Buck, chairman of the gynecology department at Watkins, was named chairman of the college faculty of his majuris, known as genital warts. Genital warts appear on both men and women. Some lesions may be present but not easily seen. If left untreated, the lesion can cause cancerous conditions in the cervix. Buck was appointed to his new position by Richard Keeling, press associate, which is located in Rockville, Md. The task force comprises ten people from around the country including physicians, nurse and medical staff. Buck said that the goals of the task force were to publish a brochure outlining the proper diagnosis and treatment of her patients in informational pamphlets for patients. "The reason the task force was appointed is because of the tremendous increase on all college campuses in HPV disease," Buck said. "It's a problem all over the country." "I's a problem an over the fidelity," Charles Vockey, chief of staff at Wash. said that HIV was a great epidemic in Asia and across the country. Buck said that HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease at KU. "We're leading in the nation here in the treatment of HPV disease." Yokes said. "We're right on top of it because of Dr. Buck." Since February, 1987, Buck said he had treated 450 females and 150 males who had HPV. "I find HPV lesions in over 60 percent of the male partners of female patients, and most don't know they have it." Buss said. Although HPV is usually transmitted sexually, it can be picked up from a wet towel or wet bench. Buck aid "Prevention is all that we have right now," he said. "There are more people who have the virus in the genital tract than they show up with the lesions, or show up with anything on their pap mucus." Buck said the best way to prevent HPV for males to use a condom and for females to use a spermicide.
