University Daily Kansan / Friday, October 21, 1988 5 News Briefs COMPLEMENTARY TEXTBOOKS DISCUSSED: The University Senate Executive Committee today will discuss questions about the sale of complimentary copies of textbooks. Parker Ladd, director of the higher education division of the Association of Teachers for Education, wrote a letter to the Faculty Senate on Sept. 7 asking it to review the sale of common stock. Complimentary books are those that publishers give to faculty members of they can examine the books for possible class use. The books are supposed to be kept or donated, but not resold. "While the sale of these books . . . appears harmless on the individual level in broader perspective, we believe it is essential to your profession." Ladd wrote. He wrote that resale of complimentary copies of books resulted in the creation of a new magazine, authors of about $1 million a year, according to statistics from the Book Trust. 'OTTAWA COLA WAR' SCULP-TURE: The only way Stan Herd's sculpture can be seen is from an airplane, and only for about an hour. But anyone can participate in the program. Herd, a Lawrence crop artist, needs several hundred more projects to be completed next this Saturday in Ottawa.
