The team had won two games in last week. After coming up short of qualifying after last spring's national tournament, and women's bowling teams are looking for this year to be a break- away. The bowlers have a right to be optimistic, Kansas coach Mike Fine said. Seven bowlers return from a men's team that finished second at the game and fourth at the sectional tournament. Their backs are back from a women's team that finished second at regional and they were ranked 15th in the national last week. "We are going to try to build on the success of last spring." Fined said. "The key part of that is developing into a championship team over the course of the season. We are looking at players with some experience and good qualities. But we are also looking for bowlers with good mental attitudes." "There's no doubt in my mind that both our men's and women's teams are able to win games than 30 people try out for the team this fall. You can see the interest in them." Both Kansas teams began their seasons last week at camp at the Brunswick College Match Play Open in May, before taking third and the men's team eighth. Although the Jaiyawks didn't win the tournament, Fine said he still was pleased. "I was especially pleased with the women's performance, but not because of where they finished." Fine said. "We didn't come anywhere close to bowing to our potential and we still finished bird. Our team didn't know that we have the talent to do so much better makes me feel pretty good about this year." The four bowlers returning from last year's women's team are junior bobbie Wolf, Judy and sophomores Amy Judy, Fletcher Sheila and Shelly Wiley. Senior Traci Goebeli, who sat out a year after transferring from Kansas State, led the Jayhawks with a 179 average in Denver. The seven returning bowers from last year's men's team are seniors Smith, James Kiser and Jeff Alton and sophomores Morris Riese and Percival, who is beginning his third year on the team, said Kansas has improved since last season. Alton, who transferred from K-State, said the Jauhawk's program was more advanced than the Wildcats' "We are getting better all the time," Verres said. "The thing we have given me is a lesson. We play as a team. I don’t think many people know about the bowling program, but if we take a serious look, we can build something here."
