University Daily Kansan / Wednesday, October 19, 1988 9 Racism in Massachusetts Racial insults harm colleges AMIHERI, Mass. — New outbreaks of racial insults were reported at Smith College and the University of Massachusetts as the university incurred a post-World Series but barely school that insured 10 people. The Associated Press At Smith College in nearby Northampton, President Mary Maples Dunn sent a memo to the school's 2.722 undergraduate last week say-ing that with racial slur had been slipped onto the board and tacked onto a bulletin board. A separate memo from the Office of Student Affairs said other students ad received four similar notes since mid-September. The school said an investigation was under way. A University of Massachusetts administrator said he was looking into reports of racial slaves made over by African-Americans on a frequency reserved for foremen and supervisors of the Physical Plant Department on the Amherst campus. There have been recent racial incidents at other schools in the nation. S dePauw University fraternities and sorcerers apologized for a "ghetto party" with decorations that were violent against blacks and other minorities. Members of the six organizations at the Greenwich, Inc. campus staged a candelight vigil Monday (April 7) in support of Tau Omega house, where the party took place Friday night, to the Assis cation for Afro-American Student office. Members of the two groups, shook hands and embraced. At Stanford University, officials promised to look into two racial incidents in recent weeks. Friday, a poster at the predominantly black fraternity house UJamaan was discovered blazed with the word "nags." the reports of incidents at the western Massachusetts schools came as the University of Massachusetts prepared for a weeklong commemoration of a fight between white Boston Red Sox fans and black New York Mets fans after the Mets won the World Series on Oct. 17, 2008. Soon after the fight, racial epithets were found spray-painted on steps at Smith. East Germans to pay reparations BERLIN — the president of the World Jewish Congress said yesterday that the East Germans have agreed to accept moral responsibility and pay reparations for the murder of 6 million Jews, but he would not give specifics. "I have been given the understanding that serious consideration is being given to some renewal of relation." The Associated Press Edgar M. Brounman also said he hoped for better relations between East Germany and Israel, which have maintained a strong diplomatic relationship. "I am totally satisfied on two counts. The first is the moral position that East Germany is taking on its responsibilities on the Holocaust. The second point is payment to the sufferers and survivors."
