Richard Celeste demanded yesterday that President Reagan shut down a government-owned uranium processing plant until something was done to stop the radioactive pollution it produces. The Associated Press Pollution from Ohio uranium plant raises ire of residents The U.S. Department of Energy admitted Friday at a congressional committee hearing in Washington that the government has known of dangerous environmental issues. The Center since 'was established in 1951, Celebte said. The governor said he wrote a letter to_number demanding that the plant, located in Fernald about 18 miles northwest of Cincinnati, be closed. The plant was not used for use in nuclear weapons, which are made elsewhere. "This admission of deceit and mismanagement confirms and emphasizes what we have known in Ohio for a long time. This facility is an environmental disaster of unprecedented scale and safety of thousands of Ohioans." Celeite wrote. The letter demands that the Energy Department, which owns the plant, pay for an independent evaluation of plant employees and nearby residents to determine how their health has been affected. The governor also said the department should treat and stabilize radioactive thorium at the plant; begin a final cleanup of radioactive waste stored in two deteriorating concrete slids; and start identifying the contents of 200,000 containers of waste that have accumulated as a result of what happens to the department's waste management of the plant. Celeste and Richard Shank, director of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, said they believed the plant has been better managed since Westinghouse Materials Co. of Ohio took over its operation in January 2014, when they were concerned about more than 30 years of radioactive emissions into the atmosphere and into the water table. The Energy Department admitted in January 1985 that faulty exhaust air filters at the plant had allowed the release of at least 200,000 pounds of radioactive uranium from the plant. These incidents occurred decades, including at least 3,000 pounds from 1980 to 1985. The lawsuit is pending in U.S. District Court in Cincinnati. Five people who lived near the plant then filed a $500 class-action lawsuit that the former operator was wrongly charged with preventing the uranium releases. The lawsuit also alleged that the releases contaminated property and may have been caused by the plant. The Energy Department prompted the new furor by admitting in court documents that government officials had been aware of potential environmental problems at the facility. In response, the Lead managers to proceed with uranium processing. ACLU questions obscenity law The Associated Press TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A mechanic yesterday became the first person arranged for allegedly violating a recent Florida law hung onto bumper stickers, and an attorney said it might challenge the statute's constitutionality. Glenn Wallace Beasley, 24, pleaded not guilty to the second-degree misdemeanor in Collier County Court. He also pleaded not guilty to several other misdemeanor traffic and parole violations. Beasley was arrested Friday night in the first application of the law passed this spring. The bumper of his truck spotted a popular but scatological version of the saving, "things happen." If Beasley is convicted of violating the obscenity Beasley's attorney said he will ask a judge to dismiss the obecency charge. statute, which took effect Oct. 1, he could face up to six months in jail and a $500 fine. any gut reaction is I don't think it's constitutional." said Assistant Public Defender Phillip Roach. "It gives the arresting police officer total discretion to decide what's obscene." Charleine Carres, a laborist with the AGL in Tallahassee, said she would consult with the group's headquarters on a plan for a new city. She noted that the U.S. Supreme Court set precedent on the issue of obesity in the 1960s in a California case in which a draft maternal wearing a T-shirt denigrating the Selective Service was arrested.
