Four professors for price of one Class gives students wide view By Debbie McMahon Kanean staff writer Kansan staff writer Students in a cross-disciplinary class are getting four times the instruction for the price of one. The class has four instructors who teach the four subjects of philosophy, art history, visual art education, and art and design. "What I like best is being able to hear the professors from the different schools that are teaching each other what Jill Lindstrom on with them," said Jeff Lickard, a Leawood senior who is making in philosophy class. "The class is new to me so I really like it, think my knowledge and appertion to the field has increased tenfold." "At first I thought you could...brush the surface of the idea, but then material is hard to obtain or material available that you can get deeply into one area which you like." This is the first time the experimental class has been offered. Whether it will ever be offered again will be determined in March by evaluation by its sponsor, the Getty Center for Education in the Arts. The class, Cross-Discipine- Studies in Art. The Tradition of the Human Figure, was made possible through the assistance from the J. Paul Getty Trust. KU is one of 10 educational institutions offering the course to help improve The 500-level class is found in five different sections of the timetable, but the 28 students enrolled there do not meet all days, they meet for a lecture from at least one of the four instructors in the Spencer Museum of Art, and on Thursday, they have a drawing at the Art and Design building. Teaching the class are Stephen Adlis, professor of history; Gwen Horsley, professor of art;phy; Michael OT, professor of art; and Georion Horrosion, assistant principal. Anne El-Omani, assistant professor of visual arts education and Spencer's curator of education, coordinates the class. She said that the professors worked well together. "All the professors are very collegial," El-Omami said. "They've been able to come to a common ground in what they feel is necessary for the field. Teaching the course challenges the professors because some students have no background in fields of art, design or drawing. EO Omami said. "The trick is making it valuable to both the new student and the experienced student," she said. Gene Harrison, assistant professor of visual education, said, "We're trying to show the students that there are alternatives and different points of view. "My point of view is that the people in the class, regardless of their background, may end up teaching sometime in their career, whether it is as graduate teaching or just high schools, or even their own kids.
