6 University Daily Kansan / Tuesday, October 18, 1988 9 AIDS virus not carried by sperm cells, scientist says The Associated Press SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A researcher experimenting with a new test for the AIDS virus said yesterday that the virus appeared to be carried in sperm cells. Semen, which is ejaculated, is made up of both sperm cells and seminal fluid. That discovery could eventually be that men with AIDS could father babies who were infected with sperm cells from infected semen and using those cells for artificial insemination. But Dr. Bernard Poisez, a researcher at the State University of York Health Science Center at Syracuse, discovered a discovery that needs more study. "All we're saying is that we have a test that's so good we can detect these things and now we need to do clinical tests. Poelzig said the conducted clinical tests." He said he wouldn't recommend that men infected with AIDS attempt to pursue fatherhood through artillery ammunition and he didn't think fertility could be in or out centers would agree to try this without further testing. Poisez said determining whether the AIDS virus is carried inside a sperm cell is one of many studies to test new means of testing for the AIDS virus. The new technique, developed by Cetus Corp. of Emeryville, Calif., uses a chemical reaction, called a chemical precipitation, to liberate genetic material, such as that from the AIDS virus, a million times, making it easier to detect. Poisez said the test is faster, more accurate than some current AIDS tests. Poisez said that he had looked at 50 semen samples during the past four weeks, and then a period, even with a more sensitive test, the number of samples contain Another finding of the new test, Pointer said, is a risk in the number of infections the virus in their semen. Other researchers using the test have documented that it may be responsible for the virus in their semen. Initially, about 75 percent of the men had the virus in their semen; but recently, Poiseau said, researchers have found that about 60 percent of homosexual men who had characteristics similar to the initial group. "We think this is because they have fewer whitish blood cells in their lymphatic system," she said. "safey asex and better care, we believe the amount of infections and level of infection." Without the infections and inflammations, the number of white blood cells decreases. Poisez said. This is another finding that needs to be studied, but Poisez said it could eventually mean that researchers could have more dangerous to have even safe sex. He said researchers at the State Health Center are currently studying whether the test can be used to determine: - whether some mothers infected with AIDS would be better candidates for pre-natal use of AIDS-fighting drugs. how effective about six or seven AIDS fighting drugs are by measuring how quickly they are reducing the number of AIDS-infected cells 55 children in state custody if there are particular times when it's more likely for an unusually large number of AIDS-infected cells to be present in the semen. Four charged in child's death at Oregon religious center The Associated Press OREGON CITY, Ore. - State officials yesterday were granted custody of 55 hungry children taken from a farmhouse where an 8-year-old girl allegedly was abducted by staff members of a California-based religious center. The girl, the daughter of Ecclesia Athletic Association founder Eldridge Bridgge Jordan Jr., was taken to a fire station Friday by four adults connected with Broussard's group. She was already dead. Dayna Lorea Broussard had been beaten and drained, state medical Examiner D Larry Lewman said. Some of the other children bore marks and scars, said Bart Wilson, Cluckamans County branch manager. The boarding house where the children were taken is part of the California-based religious center. Eden Karp and her husband, Peter, co-own the building. "We're led to believe that abuse had occurred." Wilson said. "It's our recommendation that these children remain in protective custody, at least for a while." Clackamas County Circuit Judge Patrick Gilroy agreed, granting custody of the youngsters to the state Children's Services Division on grounds of neglect and abuse. The children, ranging in age from $1\frac{1}{2}$ to 16 years, were sleeping on pillows on the floor of the sparsely furnished four-bedroom juvenile centers and foster homes over the weekend. They were quite hungry when they arrived. It "seemed that they only had a tomato apiece on Friday," said Bill Carey, acting director of client services for the state Children's Services Division. According to authorities, the children were subjected to systematic beatings with a paddle or electrical shock and were to apply up to 800 strokes in front of other children, when they failed to count. The trauma of receiving and witnessing such punishments has caused psychological damage to the children. County Juvenile Department told the court. Representatives of 15 of the 18 families involved, from California, met with officials later in the day and indicated that they knew their children were in Oregon, Wilson said. Last try to free trapped whales BARROW, Alaska — Three young whales trapped by ice were apprehended and appeared to be weakening yesterday, while a huge military helicopter prepares to tow an ice-break boat with nine miles in last effort to free them. The Associated Press Rescuers used chain saws to keep two small breathing holes open by blowing air through Ocean ice, but freezing temperatures threatened to close them. The whales were trapped nearly underground as they migrated south to warmer waters. The endangered California gray whales, about 24 to 30 feet long, were caught in a continually bashing into the jagged ice. They were also exhausted from swimming against ocean current to remain in place. "They don't look as spry. Their movements are diminished." Ron Morris of the National Marine Fisheries Service said yesterday. The whales were trapped about miles northeast of this Impala town, in a shallow, few hundred feet offshore in its feet of water, with their largest breath- ing rate. The whales ordinarily can stay underwater nearly four minutes, and the dolphins can grapple with the North Slope Borough. Carroll said he had been surfacing about every two minutes, indicating that they were becoming tired and stressed. Rescuers were racing against onshore winds that threatened to collapse.
