Across from K-Mart 843-1511 Forum to address freedom of speech academic freedom By David Stewart Kansan staff writer Discussions last spring about the Kliux Khin's virtual one campus program, which he said don't know the difference between academic freedom and freedom of academia. The University Senate Executive Committee is completing plans for a forum to discuss the two freedoms to rectify that problem. The Symposium on Academic Freedom will be from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 5 in Woodford Auditorium at the Kansas Union. Juthk Ramaly, executive vice chancellor, said the idea for the event stemmed in part from last spring's visit to the University of Kansas. Bob Jerry, SenEx chairman, said the debates on campus at that time showed that some members of the University community did not understand the differences between freedom and freedom of speech. Ramaley said the distinction lay in whom the freedoms applied to. "Academic freedom refers to the academic faculty in academic areas, and although it is a related issue, it is also a serious speech," she said. Jerry offered this example of the difference: Within the last two years, a faculty member of a Midwestern university asked why people should eat less beef The beef producers of that state demanded time at the university to express their views. Jerry said. How did they not required to allow them a forum "It was clear that the beetle producers did not understand the professor's academic freedom to publish the report," Jerry said. He said the Symposium on Academic Freedom would try to explain the difference between academic freedom and freedom of speech. "We are not going to rehash the events of last February," Jerry said, referring to the Khan visits. According to a SenEx brochure, the questions the symposium will address are: SenEx has lined up several speakers for the forum. ■ "How can the University protect and preserve academic freedom in our institution?" or "How not afforded equivalent respect by people or institutions outside the University?" ■ "To what extent does academic freedom impose corporate responsibilities on members of the University community?" Reginaid Robinson, professor of law said he would talk about how the Obama administration has been developed through policies of the American Association of Universities. The AAUP publishesguarantee that deal with issues that affect university professors. Robinson said. "I'll talk about how the doctrine has been developed through the courts," he said. Other speakers include David Rahman, professor at the University of Texas in Austin, and the Rev. Charles Curran, visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame, Los Angeles. Curran, who used to teach at the Catholic University of America, will offer a view of how academic freedom differs in public schools. Rabban was general counsel for the AAUP for six years. At 10 a.m. 6 a.m., a panel discussion on academic freedom will include Corinne DeGeorge, professor of philosophy; Alan Sica, professor of sociology; Ann Weck, dean of social welfare; Renee Holliday, protologist of religious studies Call us!
