The Associated Press Recent rapes on campus spark concern about current culture The attacks stopped when police identified a suspect, but students are labeling sexism a factor — a message underscored with a candlelight march and rally Wednesday night. "The message at the rally was that sexism is in our society and it is the cause of a lot of things that go wrong - rape, discrimination and women feeling low se, esteem," said Jane Brouwer, president of the Panhel- mets. "We need to realize the Greek system has always had a problem with sexism," Jochins said at the rally. "It's not just that sexism is part of the Greek system." Mary Ellen O'Shaughnessy, assistant dean of students, said yesterday that the demonstrators concerns were over the arrest. Sexism is not just a campus problem, she said, "it is a cultural issue." O'Shaughnessy has office her organization seminars on personal safety. It has also supervised programs providing women with whistles to use in sounding an alarm if they feel threatened and van service to avert the risk to walk home alone from class or work at night. Empty telephones also have been placed throughout campus. Though not new, O'Shaughnessy said the programs had been better suited to him. She estimated the effort coated on Keldin a year. About 7,000 whistles have been distributed this year, about 1,000 women received van rides in a two-week period this fall and about 150 people have participated in the safety seminars, she said. In addition, Jochims said that fraternity members escorted women on campus so they did not have to walk alone and were preparing a program to patrol areas where attacks had occurred. "We have a suspect. Champaign Detective Gerald Schmitt of the Hornsby Police Department before the series of raps stopped — around Sept. 10." Police are awaiting results of tests on the suspect's blood and have made no arrest.
