Survey provides evidence of KU's alcohol problem Watkins treats many drinking-related injuries By Terry Buroth Kansan staff writer If it weren't for alcohol, Watkins Memorial Health Center could almost close shop at nights, said Charles Yoder. "We've got a tremendous alcohol problem," Yockey said. "Our problem is with injuries, lacerations and medical consequences associated with short-term overuse of alcohol." KU's alcohol problems were verified in a recently released report. Although Yockey said he didn't have exact figures, he said that more than 50 percent of the inpatients examined had evenings and on weekends had alcohol-related problems. He said that almost all alcohols he was called out to see had alcohol-related problems. According to "Final Report; Survey of Alcohol Use," 90 percent of KU students either use or have used alcohol. The survey also found that 34 percent of the students consumed more than five drinks on a single occasion. The study was conducted by the office of student affairs in spring of 1886, and the results are the responses of 95 shirts sold. A sizable percentage of those who drink experienced negative effects, the survey showed. For example, 32.2 percent of the students said they had missed classes while under the influence of alcohol, 28.3 percent were not attending school or having a drink. with a boyfriend or girlfriend; 26.4 percent had arguments with close friends; 31.4 percent engaged in indiscriminate sexual activities; 26.7 percent reported being raped; and 15.7 percent reported in theft or vandalism; and 13 percent reported fights. "The things we see would make you sick or blow your Yoyo," Sayland said. "Basically, when we suture up, up it's the same." David Ambler, vice chancellor for student affairs, said that he was not surprised that alcohol was a pervasive campus problem. However, he said he was surprised at the amount of drinks students consume on a single occasion. "If you take that many drinks, you won't be able to function as a student or a person." Ambler said. "The study confirmed for us that we do have a sizable amount of alcohol. We don't use it, however, the use of alcohol is typical of many American women." He said alcohol-related injuries ranged from people cutting fingers on beer can tastes to a student with a gash under his chin. But Vockey said that the cases were students who had overdosed on alcohol. Watkins treats several overflowing cases daily. Yockey said that changing the legal drinking age had not made any difference and that he had seen as many 18-year-olds with alcohol-related problems as 21-year-olds.
