Michael Dukakis did not make any major mistakes in the presidential debate last night, he didn't do anything wrong, didn't make any nontroubles either. Verbal contest helps Bush campaign but hinders Democrats Allan Gillen, associate professor of political science, said, "Dukakis had to do substantially better, and I don't think he did that." By Debbie McMahon Kansan staff writer Kansan staff writer Burdet Loomis, chairman of the political science department, said, "I felt that if they were to take on the way they went in. Both did fine in terms of format. That result hurt his career." Loomis said Dukalis was credited with both the best and the worst performances in his statement was about abortion because Dukalis was articulate, he The worst answer was Dukakis' statement on today's heroes. Loomis said Dukakis should have been specific. "They deal with literally hundreds of thousands of people, and a couple of names should have come up." Loomis said. Loomis said he was surprised that Dukakis didn't challenge Bush more about the question of another debate. However, he said he doubted whether another debate would bring another president to leadership of another might decrease. Roy Laird, professor of political science and faculty adviser of the University of California at Los Angeles, was the first of the president's students. He said the first two, between the presidential candidates and the vice presidential candidates, were tied. "This time — maybe my prejudices are showing — 1 think Bush won," Laird said. Cigler said he was disappointed that no new ground was covered and said he thought the debate was boring. Laird said the answers from both candidates seemed less scripted. But he said Dukakis seemed more relaxed and felt more grateful and presidential. "I have yet to hear any concrete plans of how to deal with the deficit," Cigler said. "One of the central campaign is not being addressed." "I doubt that there were very many voters who switched candidates." DEBATE Continued from p. 1 moments earlier on stage Susan Estrich. Dakisik's manager manager, saia instant post-debate poll's didn't mean much. "We didn't expect a knootout, what we expected was a strong effort to governor speak to people about the future tonight." Of the 639 viewers in the ABC News poll, 49 percent rated Bush the debate winner, and 33 percent thought Dukakis won. The network said its survey had a margin of error of 4 percent. The Associated Press panel of debate judges called Bush the winner, reversing the outcome of the first debate. Five of the six judges said Bush had won, most of them for his foreign policy issues. Only one judge sided with Dukakis. James J. Unger, director of the National Forensics Institute at American University in Washington and Johns Hopkins University. often led to a debate breakdown on issues such as deficit control, defense policy and social programs." Whatever else it accomplished, the event marked the end of a long string of debates in the 1988 primary and general election campaigns. Bush, ask whether he would agree to a third encounter with Dukakis, said "No." people have had it up to here with debates." The debate was notable for what was not said as well as her. Dukaiks never mentioned the Iran-contra affair or Reagan administration dealings with Panama's Gen. Manuel Antonio Noriega, two key lines of attack in the first debate three weeks ago. . Dukakis' concern for an election breakthrough too But he took a poke at Republican vice presidential runate mate Dan Quayle when that subject came up. Bush strongly defended Quayle, saying the Indiana senator "could do the job," if tragedy thrust him into the Oval Office. Dukakis replied that Bush had said the selection of Quayle would "tell all . . . and it sure did." from E.B.
