. University Daily Kansan / Friday, October 14. 1988 5 Union renovations almost complete By Mark Fagan Kanean staff writer The two-year renovation of the Kansas Union is nearly complete, but it's only the beginning. The 8.3 million phase I of the renovation will be completed by January 1888, said Jim Long, direc- tor of the project. However, phase II of the renovation will be started in two to three years. Long said. The estimated $1.1 million project would complete renovation of the bookstore, improve mechanical electrical equipment, reallocate Student Union Activities and rearrange the fourth floor of the Union. The changes are needed in both cases. Lung said, "We're talking about places in some parts of the bathing that are almost 65 years old," he said. "Some people want to change it before it became a problem." Long said phase 1 of the project was about $\frac{4}{5}$ complete. Phase 1 renovations include the first On the first floor, textbooks were moved to the second level and mechanical and electrical equipment were stored in their space. Air circulation systems in 600 chillers, were installed beneath the bookstore. On the second floor, the Hawk's Nest, Prairie Road and Trail Room food services were replaced Financing needed to continue project by the extension of the bookstore and the Great Book Shop. Long work said on the second floor was complete except for the south corridor in front of the bookstore. The other corridors would be finished by the end of the month. Student offices were relocated to the fourth floor to make way for the consolidation of food services on the third floor. The new Union Square cafeteria, the hawk's Nest and the Prairie Room were moved nearer to the renovated kitchen. Long said that the kitchen had been transformed into a kitchen to the second floor. Administrative offices for food services remain there. Long said third floor renovation was complete. On the fourth floor, the Oread Book Shop was moved to the second floor to make way for student offices. The Student Senate complex will have five offices, and other student organizations will have nine offices. Jim Modig, campus director of facilities planning, said the renovation was on schedule. "Barring any delays, they should be able to move in by the spring semester," he said. Once phase I is complete, Modig said, plans to be ahead with phase II could begin. He said there definitely would be further improvements to the Union. "Who knows?" There may even be a phase III to finish off the whole thing," he said. Moldig said construction of phase II could be finished in six or eight years. Construction of phase I would take longer. He said lack of financing was what prevented all the improvements from being made soon. The "areas that would be left are not as complex or complicated," Moliad said. "When you look at a kitchen, plumbing and electrical work, that's more important than ballrooms and offices, they're not as complex." "You have to look at what you can afford now." Modd said. "You have to work with a reasonable salary." The University of Kansas Memorial Corporation, which runs the Unisys, is spending $ 5. 2 million on phase 1 of the project. Reserves account for about $ 7 million in a revenue bond provides the other $ 3. 8 million. "We knew early on that we wouldn't have enough money for all of it at once." Long said, "We didn't need to be as much operational. We could not just close down the building. We needed to maintain our service in the city."
