University Daily Kansan / Thursday. October 13, 1988 Sports 11 Dodgers set up all-California World Series The Associated Press LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers won the National League pennant last night by beating the favored New York Mets 6-0 in Game Seven behind Orel Hershiser's whitter. The game completed one of the greatest turnovers in major league history. "People were doubting what we could do this season, doubting what we could do this season," said Coach Jerry Sax. Sax, who had three hits, two battens batted in and two runs scored. "We had to play the best team we've ever played." The Dodgers will host Game One of the 85th World Series on Saturday. They will face Oakland in a rematch of the 1974 Series won by the Athletics in five games. Hershiser, the playoff most valuable player who played the regular season with a record 59 consecutive scoreless innings, started Games One and Three without getting a decision and saved Game Four. Of the 16 games against the Dodgers, Hershiser accounted for $24 \%$. "I had no idea I could shut them on two days," rest after relief, "Herbis said. He had started Games One and Three, relieved in Game Four and was warming up in Game Five. "I thank God I have an arm that can bounce back like this." But he didn't start Game Seven like he was going to finish it. "My mechanics were very bad for about the first two or three innings with what the team had to do, but they were good." "I just didn't know how to cope with it. "Finally I got into a groove and made some adjustments. I came in here and looked at the bed of my first inning and then I felt better." said. He broke the major league playoff mark of 22 % inions, set in 1868 by Boston's Roger Clemens. The old NL playoff mark was 18 innings by Mike Scott of Houston, also in 1868. "He got stronger as the game went on," catcher Mike Scioscia said. "He's the type of pitcher you have to yank out of the game." catcher Mike Sciocca said. "It's the type p, pitcher you have to yank out of the game." So they moved to Los Angeles in 1988 and their first since 1981, when they went on to beat the New York Giants by a score of 21-17. The Dodgers scored first in six of the seven games against the Mets. They made things easy for Herssihier by scoring a run in the first offier Ron Darling. Los Angeles then beat Boston to win. New York made three sloppy foul shots. The Mets and Darling self-destructed in the Dodgers' big second inning. Sax, 12 for-40 lifetime against Darling, got the bugger started with a singer and man who was wearing a left-field line. Kirk Gibson, injured with a palled left-hand shoulder, hit an sacrifice fife Scioscia and Jeff Hamilton hit on singles and Darling misjudged Alfredo Griffin's bunt, allowing it to fall in for a single to load the bases. Hershiser hit a one-hopper to third that rookie Gregg Jerieries bobbled for an error, allowing Sciens to score and reload the ball. He danced on a chase Darling and on bring On Gooden, who started Game Four. It was Gooden's start that secured the win. After Hatcher advanced the runners with a groundout, the Mets walked Gibson to load into the tent. The strategy almost worked when Marshall hit a ground ball to second. But Wally Backman's overly cautious flip to shortstop Kevin Elster was wild, allowing the fourth run of the inning to score. John Shelby scored the scoring with a sacrifice飞 to left. Daring pitched one plus innings, allowing six runs, four earned, and six hits. Recruitment for early signing improves team, Williams says By Arvin Donley Kansan sportswriter After being on the road recruit for 38 of the last 42 days Kansas basketball coach Roy Hwam hires and his staff are hoping their hard work will pay off during the signing period that runs Nov. 9-16. "We'd like to sign some guys during the early period," Williams said. "But it's sort of like getting married — both parties have to agree. It's also like farming — you do all the work you can, but you don't know until the crops come in and you know what the prices are." There will be six positions open on next season's roster and Williams said he would like to fill all of the during the early signing period. Last November, former Kansas state representative and his staff did not sign any requests for early signal period and Williams said that the Pajahs behind him were on the verge of taking over. "In one of the guys' list of the top 100 players last year, 85 of them signed in the fall." Williams said. Williams said having to recruit this year's freshman class in the pit kansas behind most collegiate teams is a recruiting for next season at that time, having already signed most of their prospective players for this season. "I think that's what hurt last year's staff's that they didn't sign anyone in the fall. When you don't, b) then you really have to start "That's really where it counts," he said. "You know you junior class is in the spring of his junior year he has to get some information from you or you're not in school." Brown's staff signed its five recruits for this season during last spring's signing period. Only two — freshman guard Sean Tunstall and forward Freeman West— will be eligible to play this season. Williams said the positive impact of the National Championship last season had been negated by the rumors about the NCAA investigation. "It has been used against us. It was written in one publication that we were going to lose a couple of scholarships. Three days later, two young men that we were recruiting told me over the phone I received a copy in the mail. So other schools have used it against us." "Every single home I've been. In we had to address that issue. He sailed back to the airport up before they did. But, some of the time it was one of the first ones to arrive." Williams said although there were some aspects of recruiting that he disliked, he did enjoy meeting prospective recruits. "The part I don't like is the rental car there and back and the airplane there and back and the hotel rooms," Williams said. "But, the actual recruiting aspect, I enjoy that. I feel like you had better enjoy it because I don't care how good of a coach you are, you better be two things — you better be dognome kyu or have come home to happen to you like you did here from Danny Manning coming in." KU women's tennis team prepares for invitational By Ken Winford Kansan sportswriter Hanging on the wall outside the office of Kansas women's tennis coach Eric Hayes is a newspaper article. The story appeared last spring — the day after Oklahoma State won its eighth straight Big Eight Conference tennis title. On the bottom of the article, "Play Momma," has a title. Lights highlighted in bright yellow were statements made by Oklahoma State coach Brad Soudack follow- ing the final play. Asked if the Cowbars were far more anyone else in the Big Eight than any other, they replied in article, "I think so. That sounds kind of cooly. I shunk this show we are going to see." Hayes, who coached Kansas to a third-place finish behind Oklahoma State and Oklahoma in the tournaments, said a reason for posting the article. "I put the story up there the day after the Big Eight tournament and it was great," he said. "I want the players on our team to see what other people are saying about them." "Okahama State is a very strong team, but I don't consider ourselves an elite team." Okahama State and Okahama beat us last year, but we are a new team with a new style. Players from Kansas and Oklahoma State will likely meet tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday at the Oklahoma State Invitation at Stillwater, Okla. Other teams in the tournament are Oklahoma, Kansas State, Tulsa, Southwest Texas State and Tyler Junior College. It will be the first meeting between Kansas and Oklahoma State players since the conference tournament. Kansas sophomore Mindy Pelz said she was looking forward to finding out how the Jayhawks compared with the Cowboys. "Okahama State is a tough team, but I think we have the ability to be them." Pelz said. "They have won the Big Eight Conference for so long, they think they will always dominate. After playing in the Harvard Classic in 2014, Oklahoma nosedies and Kentucky, Oklahoma State doesn't seem as impressive." Jayhawk senior Susie Bergland said playing a difficult schedule this fall would help Kansas against strong conference teams in the spring. Sophomore Mindy Pelz and the rest of the Kansas women's team are looking forward to playing Oklahoma State at this weekend's "Last year we would go in and Oklahoma State would be the best team we played all year," Berglund said. He is now playing teams this fall. Winning the Big Eight has been a goal for this team since I've been here. Oklahoma State has been the dominant team in the NCAA, and we're going to win the game. We will be shooting for them." Hayes said he wasn't as concerned with winning or losing during the fall season as he was in the spring. "Since it's so early and we are so young, I don't want to put a lot of emphasis on these fall tournaments. "Hayes said, 'This tournament gives us a great chance to see him like Oklahoma State has done.'" We are to knock them off in the spring. "We could go down there right now and compete with them. Sometimes it takes a sense of urgency to beat a team." "We can come back from this tournament." knowing what we need to work on." The Kansas freshmen were two of 41 players asked to try out for eight games. Both teams will play singles and doubles at the tournament starting Oct. 28 in Kansas. Kansas players Reeve Haydau-chay and Eveline Hammers have been invited to participate in the quality of American Women's Championship.
