University Daily Kansan / Thursday, October 13, 1988 5 FBI recruiting draws protests Student group brands bureau activities as legalized terrorism 3y Laura Woodward kansan staff writer Five members of the Young Socialist Alliance protested peacefully yesterday outside Green Hall where an FBI special agent was conducting interviews inside the building. The group held signs that said "Federal Bureau of Intimidation" and "FIBS stands for legalized terrorism." Brown said that most reactions from passersby were positive. "We are protesting against the recruitment at the law school," said Todd Brown, Kansas City, Mo., resident and former KU student. "The FBI takes advantage of the job opportunities that we who get four-year liberal career degrees and who can't find one." Robert H. Meredith, the FBI special agent who interviewed students yesterday, disgraced with Brown "I feel that they are misinformed," he said. "They would have to talk with some of the students we are interviewing to get a better idea about what we're doing." Meredith said the FBI recruited at KU twice a year. "We try to remove the mystique and myth associated with the agency." Michael Davis, dean of law, said the demonstration was not embarrassing to the school. "They (the FBI) have seen this before," he said. "Clearly, a peaceful protest is in the best tradition of constitutional rights, so it doesn't affect us in a negative way." The alliance, a registered student group with the organizations and activities center, also is opposed to Brown said the alliance was affiliated with the Socialist Workers Party, a national organization formed in 1938. The alliance was formed about a year ago and last month, the Ku Kluan Klan came to the campus in March. Gary Stonelake, Kansas City, Mo., resident, said the group was revolutionary. "We're pretty small right now, but we're trying to get more people," he said. Student Senate reconsiders action, cuts funds for International Club By Craig Welch Kansan staff writer Student Senate reconsidered a bill last night that was passed at the Sept. 28 meeting and reduced funds for the International Club by $1,826. The new amount allocated to the club is $4,574. Bruce Breckenridge, Interfacer- tor for the other numbers were confused by the large number of amendments to the bill that were made at the last meeting. Following last week's meeting, some senators also had expressed concerns that Senate had overfinanced the club. "They have given us a huge increase in cost, but they haven't justified the need." Jon Groebler, holler senator, said at the last meeting. Some senators and Brook Menees, student body president, met after the last meeting with a club representative to negotiate an agreement for the new club. The board he planned to veto the bill because of possible overfinancing of the club. But the bill was reconsidered and the funders findors cut the funds. "That way we had the best of both worlds." Menees said. "They could have their reception, and they could make some reasonable cuts." The International Club had a reception with Chancellor Gene A. Bulge on Oct. 4. 4th Mennets vetoed the request, and we have had the funds for the reception. Obsessions were raised during last night's Senate meeting about the Senate's responsibility to raise questions before passing, bill, rather than waiting two weeks to reconsider it. Martine Araron, law senator, said, "It is important that Senate realize its responsibility to get all the facts before making a decision. If they had questions about the bill, it should have been tabled." Directly following this statement, Senate tabulated a $997 bill to finance the Undergraduate Review. The review is a registered student organization that wants to publish written articles and public statements on hour debate, the bill was sent back to Finance Committee to "work out the problems." In other Senate business, a bill for $793.80 was passed to finance advertising for Alcohol Awareness Week, which begins Oct. 16. Mobile homes, hogs both stink, neighbors say The Associated Press WELLSVILLE-- John Fisher's plan for a mobile home park in Wellesville isn't going over too well with folks in the area. They've begin efforts to fight it, which prompted Fisk to test the winds on an alternative likely to be even worse. To announce his intentions, Fisher made a four-foot-square sign that read, "Coming Soon, Foxfire Mobile Estates or Fisher's Hog Farm. Your Choice. Remember the Prevaling Winds." Fisher needs a zoning change to put a mobile home park on the 40 acres he owns, and area residents have hired a lawyer and are circulating a petition against the proposal. The request to rezone the land goes before Franklin County officials at a meeting on Oct. 26 in Ottawa. In the face of opposition, Fisher put forth his idea for an alternative use that would fit the present agricultural use. "There's nothing like fear," Fisher said. "That's what the Internal Revenue Service works on. If you threaten in a subtle way, they're going to do the right thing. They're keeping. You've got to get them moving in the right direction." Mostly, Fisher said, he said the sign will prompt discussion. He said that the eastern Kansas community of about 1,600 needed an affordable place for young and old members who said they didn't want the community to change. guess I just know how to aggravate people." Fisher said. "I don't want a few people because they don't want the hog farm." Fisher said the sign was all in fun.
