SPORTS TUESDAY. JANUARY 31, 2006 8A THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Exits CONTINUED FROM PAGE 12A This allows players six years to graduate. The rate for this year's freshman class will not be calculated until 2012. The six departed players will not be factored in. The NCAA requires a 50 percent graduation rate. NCAA Representative Eric Christianson said the NCAA would not punish schools that fell below the 50 percent line until at least 2008. At that time, probation would likely be the first punishment administered. Jim Marchiony, associate athletics director, said paying close attention to student athletes' performances in the classroom was vital to keeping the graduation success rate intact. "You have to monitor everything closely," he said. "It can affect the amount of scholarships you get next year." Edited by Frank Tankard Robinett CONTINUED FROM PAGE 12A As for Kansas State, well, Kansas needs some revenge for that game, and will come out extra-focused. The same applies for Missouri. Kansas should be favored in every game except against Texas on Feb. 25 in Austin, Texas. But again, the way the layhawkeyes are playing, there is no reason they can't win. Who knows how good they will be by then? They are every bit as talented as the Longhorns, if not more so, and could be better players by game time. Okay, so a 14-2 conference record isn't likely, but it is possible. A 10-6 record is certainly within reach. A team with the No. 1 shooting percentage defense in the country and a sudden offensive burst of 90 points per game during the past five games, no team will want to see Kansas in its bracket on Selection Sunday when, not if, the Jayhawks are selected. Robinett is an Austin, Texas junior in journalism NFL MVP at top of game THE ASSOCIATED PRESS DETROIT — There is somebody who can beat NFL MVP Shaun Alexander at his own game. Erik Anderson, the founder of the American Foundation for ... Chess? Alexander said the Seattle-area entrepreneur was the last person to beat him at one of his many loves outside of football. "Yep, first or second week of the season. But he got lucky," Alexander said, feigning disgust. Alexander is at the top of his day-job profession this week, a potential Seahawks free agent, league rushing champion and NFL record holder with 28 touchdowns this season. And he is about to play in its ultimate game, Sunday's Super Bowl against Pittsburgh. Yet chess is just one of the many sides to Alexander that the nation never sees. Much of the nation doesn't know Alexander has a foundation in his name that focuses on leadership and character modeling for fatherless, teenage men. "I love seeing young men go finish high school, going to college, getting married. It's a great honor to help kids do that," he said. Anderson's nonprofit chess federation has also started a program to teach chess to grade-school children across the country to improve critical thinking, math and problem-solving skills. Hanging with kids, that's another game Alexander loves to play. NCAA BASKETBALL No.4 Villanova survives rallies beats Louisville THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PHILADELPHIA — Allan Ray matched his season high with 26 points and No. 4 Villanova equaled its best start in the Big East with a 79-73 victory against Louisville on Monday night. The Wildcats (16-2, 7-1) twice seemed to have control of the game with a double-digit lead but the Cardinals (14-7, 2-6) pulled close twice before losing for the fifth time in six games. As usual, Villanova relied on its four guards for almost all of its offense. Mike Nardi had 20 points, Randy Foye added 19, all but two in the first half, and Kyle Lowry had eight. They came into the game accounting for 79 percent of the Wildeats' points and the four had all but five of the points in the 72-70 last-second win over Notre Dame on Saturday. Villanova started 7-1 in the Big East in 1982-83. Taquan Dean had 23 points and seven assists for Louisville, which continues to struggle in its first season in the Big East. The Cardinals, who were ranked seventh in the preseason poll and reached as high as No. 4 during the season, fell out of the Top 25 on Monday. Villanova had an 11-point lead in the first half that Louisville cut to five at the half. The Wildcats again used the three-pointer, they finished with 14, to pull away to a 63-48 lead, but the Cardinals chipped away by going inside and they got within 70-69 with 3:40 to play on a basket by David Padgett. George Widman/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Louisville's Andre McGee, left, and David Padgett, right, guard Villanova's Allan Ray in the first half Monday, during their game in Philadelphia. Ray matched his season high with 28 points and No.4 Villanova equaled its best start in the Big East with a 79-73 victory against Louisville. ▼NFL Owens visits Denver in search of trade THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Terrell Owens and his agent visited Denver on Monday, talking with coach Mike Shanahan to see if he might be a fit with the Broncos. Owens is under contract with Philadelphia, but the Eagles have given him permission to seek a trade. there was no deal, told The Associated Press the volatile receiver had a good meeting with Shanahan. Owens and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, were shown by KCNC-TV at the Denver airport on their way out of town Monday night. Denver is a suitor, and a person familiar with the negotiations, who spoke on condition he not be identified because The coach does have a history of taking chances on so-called risky players. Some, like Gerard Warren and Todd Sauerbrun, have worked out. Others, like Maurice Clarett and Dale Carter, haven't. "Whoever that guy might be ... there's always a possibility if somebody handles himself the right way, they could come into this organization," Shanahan said. "But they're going to have to live by the standards we practice." The day after the Broncos lost to Pittsburgh in the AFC championship game, several Broncos said they would welcome Owens in their locker room. "If it would work anywhere, I think it would work here because of the guys in the locker room," center Tom Nalen said. "Guys would keep him straight. I think he'd conform. He'd fit in here." In November, the Eagles suspended Owens for the remainder of the season for his repeated criticism of the team, Donovan McNabb and several other issues. Owens is due $7.5 million if the Eagles keep him on their roster after March 1. He has five seasons remaining on the $49 million contract he signed in 2004.
