Skill and size wins BY DANIEL BERK dberk@kansan.com KANSAN SENIOR SPORTSWITTER Kansas outrebounded Texas Tech 55-28 and had 18 offensive rebounds. In their last game, the Jayhawks had only six offensive rebounds in their 95-85 victory against Iowa State. The legendary coach, who has just about seen it all, couldn't bear to watch anymore. After sophomore forward Darnell Jackson snagged another offensive rebound and slammed the ball with two hands, Knight had enough. While Julian Wright hugged teammate Sasha Kaun on the sideline with a wide smile on his face, Texas Tech coach Bobby Knight put his head in his lap. The offensive rebounds and exciting put backs were a large reason Kansas was able to defeat Texas Tech 86-52 Monday night. Kansas started the rebounding clinic early and didn't let up. On the first possession of the game, sophomore guard Russell Robinson missed on a jump shot, but Wright was there to put it back right away and give the Jayhawks an early lead. Knight said after the game the reason Kansas was able to be so successful on the offensive glass was because of its quickness. Self was searching for a combination of big men that worked well with the improving play of the starting guards. He started Kaun and Wright together for the third time in a row and seemed to be settling in on a big man rotation. Wright started his third game in a row Monday night alongside Kaun and both were aggressive early. They gave the KU guards second and third opportunities to score on possessions. "We had a size advantage tonight, so we thought that was something we obviously had to take advantage of that," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "I thought Sasha and Julian both got us off to a good start. But everyone got in there tonight and did some good things." "Quickness is more important to them," Knight said. "Their big kids are mobile. They move well. It is a team that has been coached very well, and they get the most out of themselves." "Before the game, coach told us to crash the boards," Jackson said. "Mainly, he told Brandon to crash the offensive glass. We just took care of business and went out there and did what coach told us to do." Wright assisted on three of Kaun's five baskets in the game. Kansas outrebounded Texas Tech 28-12 in the first half. The Jayhawks had 12 offensive rebounds in the first half; the Red Raiders had two. "I do know this: I believe Sasha benefits more than anyone else playing with Julian," Self said. "He does the best job of sealing, and Julian does the best job of finding the open man." Megan True/KANSAN Freshman guard Brandon Rush goes up for a slam dunk off a fast break in the second half of Monday night's game against Texas Tech in Allen Fieldhouse. Rush lead the Jayhawks with 24 points and 11 rebounds in their 86-52 victory. — Edited by Vanessa Pearson Basketball cheers and jeers Knight doesn't have the best fashion sense. Best fan attire: The person in the front row dressed up like texas tech coach Bobby Knight. The logo patches on the black sweater made the outfit. Best sign: "Could young kornheiser take Wilbon?" I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that to make tomorrow's 'Pardon the Interruption' on LSPN. Michael Wilbon better give the baby lay hawks some credit. Unexpected appearance at the Fieldhouses SportsCenter anchors Scott Van Pelt and Neil Everett. Everett got away with wearing the Hawaiian shirt because that's kind of his thing and at least it was Kansas blue Worst gear: The texas tech red and black striped warm up pants Best tan line: "This game is so unexciting because we're crushing them. And I'm loving it." Cheers: Freshman guard Brandon Rush. Please give the KU faithful at least one more year nonguarin durhillie contest. It would have been nice for him to at least draw some iron on his three point shot attempts for cash Why do they always pick the most unathletic people for those contests?
