Senate welfare debate threatens early congressional adjournment WASHINGTON —(UPI)—A Senate floor battle over welfare restrictions in the Social Security bill was the main obstacle today as Congress rushed toward adjournment. Lawmakers still hoped to go home Friday or Saturday at the latest.
