On Colorado's first possession, quarterback Kordell Stewart dropped back to pass on third down and found wide receiver Michael Westbrook open in a man-to-man Kansas defense. The completed pass allowed Westbrook to reach the Kansas 28-yard line for a 51-yard gain. Westbrook said he was surprised by the man-to-man coverage. "They can't do that against us," he said. "If you do, we're going to take advantage." Just that fast. After two runs by Colorado tailback Rashan Salam, the Buffaloes took a 7-10 lead after only 1:19 had ticked off the clock. The Buffaloes erupted for 639 total yards in the game, including seven touchdowns. Colorado improved to a 9-1 record, while Kansas fell to 5-5 overall. That production has been typical of the Buffalo offense led by Stewart. Westbrook and Salaam. "We have a high-powered offense." said Salaam, who rushed for 237 yards on 30 carries. By no coincidence, the three players have their share of all-time records at Colorado. After Saturday's game, Salaam has 1,796 yards rushing and 22 touchdowns, setting the school record for most yards and touchdowns in a season. Westbrook became Colorado's all-time receiving yardage leader. With 117 yards against Kansas, he added to his career total of 2,476 and surpassed Charles Johnson's record of 2,447 yards. "If everybody's playing hard, nobody can stop us, 'Westbrook said. "If we come in flat, we can get heat." The Buffaloes' balanced attack made it hard for opponents to focus on a particular area. Salaam said Westbrook's deep reception in the first quarter against Kansas helped open the defense for him. "With Westbrook, it makes the safeties play back and gives me more room to work," he said. "It opened up the running game." Colorado's explosion against Kansas came after losing against Nebraska two weeks ago and defeating Oklahoma State only 17-3 last week.
