UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Monday, November 14, 1994 5A FCC votes for cable rate increase Lawrence cable rates will not be increased By Manny Lopez Kansan staff writer Despite a federal ruling Friday that cable television companies can charge more for services, Lawrence rates should remain unchanged for now. "The current FCC actions give us the legal right to increase our rates," said Dennis Knipfer, general manager of Sunflower Cablevision, 644 New Hampshire St. "We have nothing planned through January." On Friday, the Federal Communications Commission voted 3-to-2 to give cable television companies the right to charge higher rates for each additional channel that the company adds to its service. That ruling changes a FCC ruling in February that had mandated that cable companies reduce rates by up to 17 percent. Friday's ruling was approved because adding channels required more work and increased operating costs, Knipfer said. Now, cable companies can expand services without cutting costs somewhere else, he said. "We are continually reviewing our service and rates," Knipfer said. "The decision was made only to gain revenue for increased expenditures." Basic cable service in Lawrence now costs $18.50. For that price a subscriber has access to 44 channels. In March 1993, that service cost $17.95, Knipfer said. Knipfer said Sunflower Cablevision evaluated its rates quarterly but had not implemented a rate increase since March 1993. If Sunflower Cablevision re-evaluates its rates and decides to charge more for additional channels, rates could go up as much as $1.50 a month. Under the FCC ruling, cable operators will be allowed to add six additional channels at a rate of 20 cents for each channel. The companies could also charge subscribers an additional 30 cents to cover programming costs. Then, after two years, cable companies could add a seventh channel at an additional 20 cents. Ultimately, those charges would be passed on to subscribers. The Associated Press contributed Information to this story. Use your Kansan Card!
